  • Giant Eagle merges transportation ops

    Simplicity is the name of the game for Giant Eagle’s new transportation endeavors.    It’s first step in this quest was to add a new transportation management system — a single platform designed to manage inbound and outbound transportation systems. Processes that were originally controlled by five systems are now streamlined through one core infrastructure. This new consolidated platform is also only piece within a much larger project: building a next-generation supply chain.  
  • Express beats customer expectations through outsourced services

    Omnichannel has pushed the envelope on customer expectations, and retailers need to deliver — literally.   Express is not only meeting customer expectations, it is exceeding them by outsourcing its fulfillment and freight operations to Radial. The omnichannel technology and operations provider’s Richwood, Kent.-based fulfillment center features space specifically built out to support Express’ back-end omnichannel needs.

  • Inland sells FedEx facility

    Inland Private Capital Corporation has sold a FedEx Ground facility in Zionsville, Indiana, for $37.1 million.   The 303,000-sq.-ft. FedEx center was constructed just two years ago on the property, which covers two land parcels totaling 49 acres in the town 17 miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis.

    The collapse of Hanjin Shipping, the seventh largest freight carrier in the world, has left $14 billion worth of cargo in limbo. Much of that is literally floating around in the ocean, unable to dock; the rest is sitting idle in ports waiting to be unloaded. For Samsung, that means $38 million worth of electronics and appliances are held hostage in the carrier-bankruptcy case. And HP has 500 containers filled with computers waiting to reach American soil.

    Kohl’s comprehensive omnichannel distribution network is about to get even bigger.   The department store chain is preparing to open a new distribution center in Plainfield, Ind., just in time to manage the 2017 holiday season.  
  • Bankrupt shipping giant trying to ease cargo chaos fears

    Hanjin Shipping Co., the world’s seventh-largest container shipper, is working to ease the potential cargo chaos caused by its bankruptcy filing last week.    The filing rose concerns among some of the nation’s biggest retailers that some merchandise may not arrive in time for the crucial holiday season, blooomberg.com reported.  
  • Amazon expands its growing Chicago-based fulfillment services

    To uphold its reputation of providing the fastest possible delivery to its shoppers, Amazon is preparing to open a new fulfillment center in Monee, Ill. This is the third warehouse planned for the suburbs of Chicago.   The 850,000-plus-sq.-ft. facility will facilitate the picking, packing and shipping of small items, such as books, electronics and consumer goods.
