Giant Eagle merges transportation ops

10/5/2016

Simplicity is the name of the game for Giant Eagle’s new transportation endeavors.

It’s first step in this quest was to add a new transportation management system — a single platform designed to manage inbound and outbound transportation systems. Processes that were originally controlled by five systems are now streamlined through one core infrastructure. This new consolidated platform is also only piece within a much larger project: building a next-generation supply chain.

“This single platform-based approach offers the distinctive competence and modern architecture necessary to drive reduced data flow; real-time visibility that drives a lower cost of ownership, and assist in fulfilling our ‘Vendor to Shelf’ initiative,” said Rich Carryer, senior director, supply chain systems, Giant Eagle.

By merging multiple supply chain solutions onto a centralized platform, the chain is on its way to eliminating empty miles, reducing overall operating expenses, improving customer service, and automating overall processes. The platform will also optimize the chain’s sourcing and utilization of all fleet and carrier assets, regardless of origin or destination, according to a company statement.

“We now have the ability to see orders from a network-wide perspective, and can consequently optimize both shipments and electronic communication with shippers, manufacturers, distributors, transportation providers and stores — providing significant benefits to our operations,” said said Joe Hurley, the chain’s senior VP.
