  • Study: Small retailers hit by showrooming; pump money into local economy

    Irvine, Calif. – Showrooming is not just something afflicting large retail chains. Eighty percent of small retailers also report being affected by showrooming, with 47% indicating a moderate impact, according to new data from small business software provider Sage North America.

    In addition, Sage data finds that $68 of every $100 spent at a local retailer stays in the community where it is spent, compared to only $32 out of every $100 spent at a non-local retailer.

     

  • No free haircuts at JCP this year

    J.C. Penney is counting on a familiar blend of promotional tactics for the 2013 back-to-school season after a slate of merchandising initiatives and a free haircut offer ended horribly last year.

    The department store retailer is touting the availability of some familiar brands and promotional pricing along with a new Joe Fresh Kids brand, expanded Levi’s assortments, free customization kits with the purchase of backpacks and shoes during August and dedicated landing pages at Jcp.com for key brands such as Arizona, Levi’s and Total Girl.

  • 99 Cents Only opens new stores

    City of Commerce, Calif. – 99 Cents Only Stores is opening new stores in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. and Kingman, Ariz. on July 25. Both will be the first 99 Cents Only stores in those municipalities.

    The retailer will be offering special 99-cent deals on items such as flat-screen TVs and scooters to the first customers in line on opening day.

     

  • Safeway sees sales rising, but profits pressured

    Safeway digested an unprecedented amount of change during the second quarter and still managed to achieve solid profit improvement and a respectable amount of sales growth while strengthening its balance sheet.

  • Overstock.com has strong Q2

    Salt Lake City – Overstock.com reported substantial increases in net revenue and income for the second quarter of this year. Total net revenue for second quarter 2013 and 2012 was $293.2 million and $239.5 million, respectively, a 22% increase. The growth in net revenue was primarily due to a 21% increase in average order size, from $138 in second quarter 2012 to $167 in second quarter 2013.

    Net income jumped an impressive 687%, from $470,000 to $3.7 million.

     

  • CafePress gets new CIO

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. — CafePress, a proprietary print-on-demand services and e-commerce platform provider, has appointed Garett Jackson to the newly created role of CIO. Jackson is based in Louisville and will report to CEO Bob Marino.

  • Nordstrom Rack to West Palm Beach, Fla.

    Seattle -- Nordstrom has announced plans to open a 35,000-sq.-ft. Nordstrom Rack at Palm Beach Outlets now under construction in West Palm Beach, Fla., in the fall of 2014.

  • Back-to-school sales forecast to fall

    Average spending per school age child is expected to decline this year from 2012 levels, according to the National Retail Federation, setting the stage for heightened competition in an already intensely competitive seasonal selling period.

    NRF said spending per child in grades K-12 would decline to $634 in 2013 compared to $688 last year and spending per college student would decline to $836 from $907. The trade group forecast total K-12 spending of $26.7 billion and total back-to-college spending of $45.8 billion for a combined market size of $72.5 billion.
