  • Study: Digital influences $1 trillion in retail sales

    New York - Digital interactions influence 36 cents of every dollar spent in the retail store, or approximately $1.1 trillion. According to the latest study from Deloitte Digital, by the end of 2014, that number will climb to 50%, or $1.5 trillion of total store sales.

  • Estée Lauder taps new VP, corporate global communications

    The Estée Lauder Companies have named Christopher C. Giglio as VP, corporate global communications. He will report to Alexandra C. Trower, EVP, global communications.

  • Mattress Firm acquires 75 Mattress King and BedMart stores

    Houston - Mattress Firm Holding Corp. has entered into an agreement to acquire Mattress Liquidators Inc., which operates Mattress King retail stores in Colorado, and BedMart retail stores in Arizona, for about $35 million. This will add approximately 75 specialty retail stores to the Mattress Firm company-operated store base in markets where it currently operates, primarily Denver, Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona.

    The closing of the acquisition is expected to occur by the end of the second fiscal quarter of 2014, subject to normal closing conditions.

  • Petco appoints new financial chief

    Petco has named Larry Rutkowski as EVP and CFO.

    "Larry is a highly accomplished executive with a proven track record of successful financial leadership for both public and privately-held companies," said CEO Jim Myers. "His unique skillset and experience in a diverse array of industries will serve us well as we continue to advance Petco's leadership position in pet specialty. We're thrilled to add Larry to our executive team."

  • It’s Elementary: IBM’s Watson Brings A.I. to Customer Experience

    IBM and digital commerce firm Fluid are collaborating on Fluid Expert Shopper (XPS), an app made with the IBM Watson artificial intelligence platform. Fluid XPS lets consumers ask highly specific questions, as they would a sales associate in a store, and receive personalized advice. The app will take advantage of Watson’s abilities to understand and learn from natural language, meaning it will engage in human-like conversations and provide product recommendations that take the context of customer questions into account.

  • Whole Foods raises money to fight hunger

    Whole Foods Market made a $46,784 donation to Solid Ground, a Seattle-based organization with a mission to build a community to end poverty. Throughout 2013, shoppers who visited any of the six Seattle-area Whole Foods Market stores had an opportunity to participate in the Bag Hunger program, with a cash donation to Solid Ground at the checkout registers.

  • Sunoco to acquire c-store operator Susser Holdings for $1.8 billion

    New York -- Energy Transfer Partners, parent company of Sunoco, plans to acquire Susser Holdings Corp in a stock-and-cash deal valued at $1.8 billion.

    Susser operates 630 convenience stores under the Stripes and Pac-N-Sac banners, in Texas and surrounding states. Sunoco operates more than 5,000 stores, primarily on the East Coast.
