  • H&M’s upscale COS brand opens in SoHo

    New York — Swedish fashion giant H&M’s higher-end brand COS will make its New York debut on Friday, in the SoHo section of Manhattan. It’s the brand’s second U.S. store—the first, in Los Angles, opened in October. 
      COS,  known for its clean lines and minimalist look, targets a more sophisticated customer than the more value-priced H&M.  The SoHo store has a upmarket feel and gallery-like look, enhanced by the use of glass and white-washed wood.
     
  • American Eagle Q3 profit down 63%

    Pittsburgh — American Eagle Outfitters’ profit fell 63% in the third quarter, to $9.03 million from $24.9 million in the year-ago period. The drop was partially driven by costs related to a restructuring program that includes closing underperforming stores and reducing headquarters headcount.  
  • Survey: Omnichannel boosts customer expectations

    Omnichannel retailing is increasing the reach companies have to their customers, but the strategy is also increasing customer expectations.

    According to a survey of marketing decision-makers in omnichannel consumer products organizations from SAP, 86% of respondents agree that omnichannel has meant that customer and consumer expectations of the organization have increased. Eighty-six percent also agree that the benefits of investing in an omnichannel approach to consumer sales clearly outweigh the challenges.

  • Best Buy says goodbye to China stores

    Minneapolis –  While some retailers, including Wal-Mart Stores, are ramping up their store presence in China,  Best Buy Co. is pulling up stakes. The consumer electronics chain has entered into a definitive agreement for the sale of its Five Star business to the Jiayuan Group, a China-based real estate firm.   
  • Walgreens names new CMO

    Walgreens Walgreens has named Linda Filler as president of retail products and chief merchandising officer effective Jan. 1.

    Walgreens President and CEO Greg Wasson said: “With the addition of Linda, our retail products division will be well-positioned to join with Alliance Boots to deliver the unique combination of products and services that will set apart our future combined company.”

  • Deb Shops files Chapter 11, citing “old, tired stores”

    New York - Deb Stores Holding LLC, owner of Deb Shops, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware, with plans to close  stores and sell inventory if it can’t find a buyer for the business.   
  • Google earns top corporate responsibility reputation

    New York – Earning a reputation is not always a good thing, but in Google’s case it is a positive development. Google has received top ranking in the new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) RepTrak Study from Reputation Index. Google beat out number two company Microsoft, which held the top spot in 2012 and 2013. Nestle exited the top 10 list this year, while Lego is the one new entrant. The full top 10 list is:   1.   • Amazon dabbles in transparency

    Amazon has introduced a line of “ethically sourced” products for Amazon Prime members.

    Amazon Elements will consist of premium products with “transparent origins,” the company said. Amazon Elements will offer Prime members an upgraded level of information about products: when and where items were made, why each ingredient was included, where the ingredients were sourced and more.
