  • Bloomingdale’s to open outlet store in Manhattan

    Cincinnati -- Bloomingdale’s will open an outlet store in fall 2015 in the heart of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. It will be the 14th Bloomingdale’s Outlet store and the first in a major urban center.

    With 25,000 sq. ft. on three levels, Bloomingdale’s Outlet on Broadway will offer a range of off-price apparel and accessories, including women's ready-to-wear, men's, children's, women's shoes, fashion accessories, jewelry, handbags and intimate apparel.

  • Membership, profits grow again at Costco

    The holidays were happy for Costco with solid gains in sales and favorable membership trends fueling profits even as low gas prices and a strong dollar had a profound effect on same store sales.

    Sales increased 4% to $26.9 billion and membership sales grew 5.8% to $582 million, resulting total revenues that grew 15.8% to $27.5 billion during the company’s second quarter period ending Feb. 15. Total company same store sales advanced 8% excluding the impact of fuel prices and a stronger U.S. dollar.

  • Fewer retailers among Fortune’s ‘Best Companies’ list

    The retail industry continued to backslide on Fortune’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, but the slight may not be as bad as it seems.

    The 2015 version of the list included 10 retailers compared to 12 retailers on the 2014 version and 14 retailers on the 2013 version. Notable inclusions on the 2015 list were Wegman’s (7), Container Store (27), QuikTrip (54),Whole Foods Market (55), Recreational Equipment (58), Build-A-Bear (59), CarMax (64), Publix (81), Zappos (86) and Nordstrom (93).

  • Cabela’s to open new store in Ohio, in spring 2016

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s Incorporated  announced plans to open a store in Centerville, Ohio, in the greater Dayton area.

    Construction on the 70,000-sq.-ft. store is scheduled to begin in 2015, with a spring 2016 opening. It will be located in the Cornerstone at Centerville development. Oberer Development Company is the developer.

  • Michaels partners with Creativebug for online classes

    Irving, Texas – The Michaels Companies Inc. has launched online arts and crafts classes taught by instructors and industry experts through an exclusive partnership with Creativebug, a subscription-based provider of online DIY instruction. Accessible anytime, anywhere, the video classes provide the novice crafter with basic techniques, such as beginning calligraphy and paper crafting, while also teaching more advanced skills and projects.

  • Weis Q4 net income drops

    Sunbury, Pa. – Decreasing pretax income helped reduce net income at Weis Markets Inc. 12% to $13.9 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014 from $15.7 million in the year-ago period. Net sales rose 4% to $713.8 million from $686.4 million, while same-store sales increased 3.5%.

    The company attributed its sales increases to its pricing programs, which were fully implemented in the first quarter. Its results also benefited from strong sales increases in pharmacy, HBC and its fresh departments.

  • Report: Dutch court overrules Tiffany payment to Swatch

    New York – A Dutch court has reportedly set aside a $449.5 million arbitration payment Tiffany & Co. had been ordered to make to Swiss watchmaker Swatch Group AG in December 2013. According to the New York Times, a three-member panel of judges ruled in favor of a counterclaim Tiffany filed in March 2014.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts seeks franchise growth in Louisiana

    Canton, Mass. - Dunkin' Donuts, is recruiting franchisees throughout the state of Louisiana. The company is placing an emphasis on the New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and Lafayette markets.

    Currently, there are nine Dunkin' Donuts restaurants in the state.
