  • Lidl opens its first round of U.S. stores

    German discount grocery retailer Lidl made its hotly-awaited debut in the United States on Thursday, opening the first nine of 20 locations it plan to open over the summer.  The chain expects to have 100 stores up and running within a year.

  • Retail sales flat in May

    Cautious consumers kept spending in check in May.     Retail sales in May were essentially unchanged on a seasonally adjusted basis after an upwardly revised gain of 0.6% in April, according to the National Retail Federation. The NRF numbers exclude automobiles, gasoline stations and restaurants.   In May, sales were 5.3% above the year-ago level on an unadjusted basis and increased four percent on a 3-month moving average year-over-year.   
  • Specialty food retailer names marketing head

    The Honey Baked Ham Company has tapped a veteran marketer -- and former associate -- to head up its marketing efforts.    The retailer named Jo Ann Herold as chief marketing officer, effective June 12, 2017. Herold returns after previously working with the brand for 16 years. She will lead strategic marketing directing development and execution for retail, franchise and e-commerce to generate continued demand for products and participation with the brand.     
  • Natural-foods grocer’s CEO fights attacks made by investor

    Already under the gun to improve business operations, Whole Foods Markets’ founder and CEO finds himself in a new struggle.  
  • Minny Penney’s to become an ‘athletic resort’

    The J.C. Penney store in Edina, Minnesota, with little movement in the aisles is about to see a lot more action.    Simon has announced that the 120,000-sq.-ft. space at its Southdale Center will close and be replaced by a Life Time ‘athletic resort.’ The company runs 123 centers in the U.S. promoting healthy eating and exercise regimens. Centers are one-stop fitness shops offering tennis, swimming, basketball, and yoga along with weight loss and nutrition education.  
  • Home decor chain enters new market

    At Home, the fast-growing home decor and accessories retailer, continues to grow its store presence.   The retailer has opened its first Massachusetts location, in Seekonk. It's one of 25 stores the chain will open this year.    
  • Panera on pace to hit $1 billion in digital sales this year

    The chain, which is known for its signature soups, sandwiches and salads, is slated to report digital sales well above $1 billion on an annualized basis. The chain is on track to be twice as high in two years, according to CNBC.
