  • PwC: Retail mergers & acquisition activity hits five-year high in 2014

    New York -- U.S. retail and consumer (R&C) total transaction value for 2014 hit a five-year high and surpassed the $100 billion mark for the second year in a row, according to PwC’s U.S. retail and consumer deals insights 2014 Year in Review and 2015 Outlook report.

    Arlington, Va. -- A breakdown in contract negotiations between labor and management at America’s west coast ports is threatening to turn a work slowdown into a full-scale strike, the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) warned.

  • Wegmans edges out Amazon to top Harris corporate reputation poll

    New York — With just 85 stores, Rochester, New York-based Wegmans Food Market edged past online giant Amazon to take the top spot for corporate reputation among the 100 most visible companies, according to the 16th annual Harris Poll Reputation Quotient study.

    Harris Poll expanded the list to 100 companies this year, up from 60, to offer deeper insight by industry. As a result, three of this year’s top 10 companies are debuting on the list, including No. 1 Wegmans, No. 7 L.L. Bean and No. 8 Publix Supermarkets.

  • Roundy’s taps Ecova for energy, sustainability solutions

    Spokane, Wash. -- Ecova, a total energy and sustainability management company, has been selected by Milwaukee-based Roundy’s Supermarkets to provide utility expense and data management solutions, as well as carbon management solutions and Energy Star benchmarking.

  • Most shoppers skeptical about data protection by retailers

    Los Angeles -- American shoppers feel they can’t trust retailers to protect their credit card and personal information either online or in brick-and-mortar stores.  According to a survey by Bizrate Insights, 62% of shoppers agreed that "Current security to protect credit card and personal information at a retailers’ brick-and-mortar stores isn’t strong enough.”

    This was only marginally worse than concerns for security on websites (60% agree) but better that mobile transactions (65% agree).

  • Niemann Foods gives shoppers Birdzi mobile view

    Quincy, Ill. - Niemann Foods, a regional independent grocer operating under the County Market banner, has selected Birdzi’s Shopper Engagement platform to provide its shoppers with new in-store services and personalized offers via the grocer’s branded mobile app. The Birdzi platform is currently deployed in eight County Market stores, but Niemann Foods plans to roll out the solution to all 45 of the grocer’s store locations in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri by second quarter 2015.

  • Survey: Retailers will love Valentine’s spending

    Austin, Texas – Retailers should love the latest predictions for consumer spending on the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday. According to a recent survey of about 1,000 U.S. adults by digital offers destination RetailMeNot, those surveyed who are in relationships are planning to spend an average of $148 on their significant other, up 30% from $114 in 2014.
