  • Survey: Top 10 discounters with the best consumer perception

    New York City -- Target, Kohl's and J.C. Penney ranked highest among discounters in consumer perception in the first half of 2011, according to YouGov BrandIndex. The company interviews 5,000 people each weekday from a representative U.S. population sample, more than 1.2 million interviews per year.

  • Marks & Spencer’s greenest store is 100% lit with LEDs

    New York City -- Marks & Spencer’s new Simply Food in Sheffield, England, is its greenest store to date, incorporating an array of sustainable design and construction features. The 12,430-sq.-ft. supermarket also has the distinction of being the first store in the United Kingdom to be 100% lit with LED technology (from Philips).

  • Safeway sees sales and income boost in Q2

    PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway Inc. reported net income of $145.8 million, or 41 cents per diluted share, for the second quarter of 2011 compared with $141.3 million, or 37 cents per diluted share for the second quarter of 2010.

    The company reported that total sales increased 7.1% to $10.2 billion in the second quarter of 2011 from $9.5 billion in the second quarter of 2010. Identical-store sales, excluding fuel saw a 0.5% increase.

  • Regency leases 8,600 sq. ft. to four new tenants in Houston market

    Houston -- Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers said it has leased 8,600 sq. ft. of retail space in Houston to four new tenants.

    In The Woodlands, Zoës Kitchen leased 3,018 sq. ft. at Sterling Ridge Village Center, bringing the center to 100% occupancy.  The restaurant is slated to open in December. Optometry office Woodland’s Eye Center leased 2,019 sq. ft. for an October opening at Indian Springs Center, bringing the center to full occupancy.

  • Food Lion expands reach in South Carolina with six new stores

    SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion unveiled Wednesday six new stores in the Greenville, S.C., area market.

  • Regency Centers leases 15,000 sq. ft. to six new tenants in Austin

    Austin, Texas -- Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers said it has leased 15,000 sq. ft. of retail space in Austin, Texas, to six new tenants.

    Pure Barre opened a 1,750-sq.-ft. studio at North Hills Town Center, bringing the center to 100% occupancy.

  • Walmart, Walgreens, Supervalu join First Lady to combat food deserts

    WASHINGTON — First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday afternoon will be joined by corporate chiefs from Walmart, Walgreens and Supervalu and smaller regional market chains as she announces a new initiative to support the Let's Move! campaign, according to a Monday posting on the blog site Obama Foodorama.
