Weis Markets completes purchase of 11 Giant stores

Sunbury, Pa. Weis Markets said Monday it has completed the purchase of 11 Giant Markets' stores located in Broome County, N.Y.

"We have completed our acquisition on schedule and are acquiring a group of stores with a strong market presence in the Southern Tier,” said Weis Markets' vice chairman Jonathan Weis. “For more than 70 years, Giant Markets has excelled at being a locally focused retailer. We will build on these strengths and are extremely pleased to welcome nearly a thousand former Giant Markets associates to our company.”

All 11 stores, which closed on Sunday evening for conversion, will reopen on Tuesday at 7 a.m. Weis Markets will hold a grand opening celebration on Aug. 30 when five of these stores will transition to a 24-hour schedule.
