  • Sears posts $170 million loss on weak sales

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- Sears Holding Corp. reported Thursday that it recorded a bigger-than-expected loss in the first quarter as its shoppers cut back on spending. The chain said it lost $170 million, compared with net income of $16 million in the year-ago period.

    The retailer had cautioned earlier in May that it expected a first-quarter loss due mainly to a drop in appliance, clothing and consumer electronic sales.

  • Charming Charlie to open at Trinity Commons

    Fort Worth, Texas -- New York City-based Centro Properties Group said that fashion accessory retailer Charming Charlie will open a new store in Fort Worth, Texas.

    The new 8,878-sq.-ft. store will open at the Centro-owned Trinity Commons shopping center.
     

  • Borders to end in-store café agreement with Seattle’s Best

    New York City -- Borders Group on Thursday said it planned to end its relationship with Seattle's Best Coffee and begin operating its own in-store cafes. 

    The move will allow Borders to reduce licensing fees as it works toward emerging from bankruptcy, a spokeswoman said on Thursday, and also to tailor its menus to customer needs.

    The company said in a filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan that it will seek the court's approval of the move to reject its leases with Seattle's Best.
     

  • Walmart CEO talks traction on comps

    Despite progress on several key merchandising initiatives during the first quarter, it wasn’t enough to prevent Walmart from logging a 1.1% decline in same-store sales, losing customer traffic and introducing the possibility the second quarter will bring more of the same. The company’s forecast for second quarter same-store sales envisions a range of possibilities between a 1% decline and 1% increase.

  • Trade in that old tablet for an Amazon gift card

    SEATTLE — Amazon.com has launched an electronics trade-in service that allows customers to exchange their used electronics for Amazon.com gift cards. According to Amazon.com, customers can trade in multiple items, including video games, tablets and cell phones, at the same time by sending in one box. 

  • Edens & Avant names former P&G exec as marketing VP

    Columbia, S.C. -- Edens & Avant announced Wednesday the hiring of Kerry Cavanaugh as its new VP marketing.

    With over a decade in global brand and product innovation management at Procter & Gamble, Cavanaugh will lead Edens & Avant in a new strategic marketing direction focused on brand building and consumer innovation in retail.

    At Edens & Avant, Cavanaugh will oversee the corporate and center specific marketing of 124 retail properties located in urban markets up and down the east coast.

  • DDR and Target launch redevelopment projects in San Antonio and Denver

    Beachwood, Ohio -- Shopping center owner and developer Developers Diversified Realty Corp. said Wednesday it will raze Terrell Plaza shopping center in San Antonio, Texas, and an existing two-story enclosed mall at Tamarac Square in Denver, Colo., to accommodate Target Corp.’s construction of two new stores.

    DDR said it intends to redevelop adjacent retail space at both centers.

  • Target Q1 profit up 2.7% on credit-card business gains

    Minneapolis -- Despite weakened sales in the first quarter ended April 30, Target Corp. saw net income rise 2.7% on the strength of its credit-card business.

    The retailer reported on Wednesday net income of $689 million in the first quarter, up from $671 million in the year-ago period.

    Total revenue rose 2.2% to $15.94 billion. Same-store sales rose 2%.

    Analysts expected revenue of $16.02 billion.
