  • Black & Decker adds gyroscope to screwdriver

    Towson, Md.-based Black & Decker has introduced the GYRO 4V MAX Lithium-ion Rechargeable Screwdriver (BDCS40G).

    The manufacturer describes the new product as “the world’s first motion-activated screwdriver.” It uses gyroscopic technology that allows users to rotate their wrist one-quarter turn to the right for forward or left for reverse.

    The variable speed feature and direction change that occurs with a twist of the wrist provide improved control while screwdriving, the company said.

    With the screwdriver’s gyroscopic technology, users only need to rotate their wrist one-quarter turn to the right for forward or left for reverse.

  • Report: Sears to spin off Hometown, Outlet into separate public company

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- A report released Monday by the Associated Press said that Sears Holdings Corp. would be spinning off its Hometown and Outlet stores, along with some hardware stores, into a separate, publicly traded company.

    Earlier this year, Sears had revealed it would split the companies but had not indicated the new organization would be a separate public entity.

    There are approximately 1,238 Hometown, Outlet and hardware stores. Five Hometown stores have been closed, along with eight hardware stores and one Outlet unit.

  • Epicor extends agreement as Ace Hardware’s only recommended POS provider

    Dublin, Calif. -- Epicor Software Corp., a global provider of business software solutions for manufacturing, distribution, retail and services organizations, and Ace Hardware Corp., the largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative in the industry, announced an extended three-year agreement.

    Under the arrangement, Epicor serves as Ace Hardware’s only recommended point of sale solution provider, with Epicor Eagle business management software offered to Ace’s retailer owners.

  • The Home Depot to acquire U.S. Home Systems

    Atlanta -- The Home Depot said Tuesday it will acquire kitchen and bath vendor U.S. Home Systems in a deal worth about $93 million.

    U.S. Home Systems manufactures and installs remodeling and organization products, as well as cabinet-refacing and countertop products, exclusively through Home Depot. The acquisition is part of Home Depot’s strategy to increase its home service business.

    The deal is expected to close by the end 2012.

  • Rona turns down $1.9 billion acquisition bid by Lowe’s

    Lowe’s made an offer, but Rona refused.

    The two North American home improvement giants will continue to operate as competitors in Canada, where Lowe’s has been growing organically for the past several years amid rumors that just such an acquisition play was in the cards.

  • Canadian home-improvement chain rebuffs Lowe’s offer to acquire

    Mooresville, N.C. -- Lowe’s Cos. on Tuesday confirmed a July 8 proposal to acquire Canadian home-improvement and hardware retailer Rona, but said the Quebec-based chain rejected the $1.9 billion offer.

    According to the 800-store Rona, the sale to Lowe’s would not be in its best interests.

    "Rona's strategic focus remains to execute on its business plan with a view to capturing the significant opportunities that it sees for the business," Rona said in a statement.

  • True Value and Epicor expand alliance

    Epicor Software Corporation and True Value Co., announced the continuation of an agreement naming Epicor as True Value's recommended Epicor(R) Eagle(R) point-of-sale (POS) solution provider.

    This 3-year agreement provides more of True Value's retailers the opportunity to benefit from Epicor solutions, according to the companies.
