  • Recognizing the value of a dollar store

    CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — First it was Family Dollar, now 99 Cents Only Stores finds itself in buyout talks, as investors are seeing the value in discount store chains.

    The company has received a proposal to take the company private from the company's founding family and investment firm Leonard Green & Partners LP for $19.09 per share, the Associated Press reported.

  • JCPenney helps underprivileged teens realize prom dreams

    PLANO, Texas -- JCPenney is giving underprivileged teens the chance to have their very own prom dress, while at the same time encouraging those more fortunate to give to a worthy cause. The company announced that from March 13 through April 2, customers can donate their gently worn prom dresses at one of more than 1,100 JCPenney stores nationwide.

  • Veteran ad exec named to hall of fame

    Tim White, SVP marketing at Fashion Bug, and a 30-year retail industry veteran, this week was inducted into the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association’s Advertising Hall of Fame. White is currently leading a team focused on building a brand identity at Fashion Bug that satisfies the clothing wants and needs of today value conscious woman. White spent the early part of his career with Kmart, ascending the ranks to become the lead marketing executive for Kmart’s launch of the super center initiative.

  • Small format countdown begins

    The retail industry is abuzz these days with talk of small format stores; whether it is Best Buy Mobile, CityTarget or now Walmart Express. Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., added more fuel to the fire this week with comments about several 15,000-sq.-ft. test stores that would open during the second quarter in rural and urban locations. Simon also introduced the prospect of rapid organic growth and potential acquisitions even though the first stores have yet to open.

  • Stein Mart jewelry buyer honored by trade publication

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla . -- Stein Mart announced that its costume and sterling jewelry buyer, Lori Cassidy, was named to the 2011 Merchants Hall of Fame by the trade publication Accessories magazine.

  • PVH, Comfort Revolution ink IZOD bedding deal

    NEW YORK -- Phillips-Van Heusen and Comfort Revolution announced that they have entered into a licensing agreement under which Comfort Revolution will market and distribute memory foam bedding and stadium seat cushions under PVH’s IZOD brand. The licensing agreement has an initial term of just over two years and provides for a three-year renewal at PVH’s option.

  • Stein Mart delivers 4Q profits, but sales slide

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Stein Mart announced that net income for the fourth quarter was $18.8 million or 42 cents per diluted share compared with net income of $2.7 million or 6 cents per diluted share in 2009. Excluding the impact of a favorably tax benefit, fourth-quarter net income increased to $14.6 million or 32 cents per diluted share compared with $8.7 million or 19 cents per diluted share in 2009.

    For the year, net income was $48.8 million or $1.08 per diluted share compared to net income of $23.6 million or 54 cents per diluted share in 2009. 

  • Kohl's opens nine new stores

    MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. -- Kohl’s Department Stores announced the grand opening of nine new stores across seven states, which the company said will create more than 1,200 jobs.

    The new stores were opened Illinois, New York, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. In addition, Kohl's plans to open a total of approximately 40 new stores in 2011. The company said it also plans to remodel approximately 100 stores in 2011, an 18% increase from 2010.
