  • Apple to double size of Fifth Avenue flagship

    Apple is going really big in Manhattan.   The retailer is expanding its flagship at the General Motors building on Fifth Avenue from its current 32,000-sq.-ft. to over 77,000 sq. ft. The Apple space is renowned for the glass cube located on the street level.    While the store is undergoing the expansion, Apple has temporarily moved into a space in the building that was formerly occupied by FAO Schwarz.     
  • Gap in augmented reality dressing room pilot

    Gap is testing an augmented reality app that lets shoppers "try on” its apparel without ever entering a store.    The app, called DressingRoom by Gap, lets customers virtually try on merchandise via their smartphone, according to a report by PSFK. It uses Avametric technology backed by the Google Tango platform and ASUS hardware.    
  • Lowe’s, seven others, sign on at Lake Nona

    Lowe’s has signed on as the third anchor at Lake Nona Landing, the newly opened shopping center within the 17-square-mile Lake Nona master-planned community outside of Orlando, Fla. The 158,000-sq.-ft. home improvement store joins current anchors Walmart Supercenter and Sam’s Club.   Developer Tavistock Development announced it has also executed leases for seven other retailers at the 53-acre site: TJ Maxx, Mattress One, Firehouse Subs, Anthony Jewelers, UPS, Rubio’s, and GNC.  
  • Nordstrom Rack headed to downtown LA

    Nordstrom Rack is going to set up shop in a rapidly expanding area of Los Angles.    The retailer will open an approximately 27,000-sq.-st. store in fall 2017 at FIGat7th, an open-air center in the heart of downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) owned and operated by Brookfield Property Partners L.P.   The new Nordstrom Rack will join Target, H&M, Victoria's Secret, MAC and other retailers and restaurants at the center, which located at 7th & Figueroa Street.  
  • InvenTrust buys adjoining centers in Pembroke Pines

    Acquisition-minded Inventrust Properties has announced the purchase of two adjoining centers in Pembroke Pines, Florida, for a total of $163 million. Following completion of an expansion project later this year, the two will total 389,000 sq. ft.   The dominant Westfork Plaza is anchored by Costco and Regal Cinemas and includes Ross Dress for Less, T.J. Maxx, and Petco. The adjoining Paraiso Parc is a Publix- anchored center with restaurants including Firehouse Subs and necessity-based retail.  
  • Vestar acquires Dallas grocery-anchored center

    Vestar announced the close of a deal to acquire the Twin Creeks Marketplace in Allen, Texas, north of Dallas.   Opened in 2016, the 43,134-sq.-ft. center sits on five acres at the intersection of W. Exchange Parkway and Alma Drive. Tenants include Sprouts Farmers Market, Verizon, Starbucks, Advancial Credit Union, Luxe Nails, Studio Smiles, and ATI Physical Therapy.  
  • CBL acquires five Sears stores in sale-leaseback deal

    CBL has worked out sales-leaseback deals with Sears Holdings to take ownership of five Sears department stores and two Auto Centers located at company malls in the Southeast. The deal was consummated for $72.5 million.  
  • Retailers unite to stop border adjustable tax

    Retailers, trade organizations and business leaders are teaming up and taking steps to stop the border adjustable tax proposal.   The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) joined more than 120 other trade associations and businesses to launch “Americans for Affordable Products,” a national campaign aimed at ending the border adjustable tax. The tariff, which is a component of the tax reform proposal under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives, would impose a 20% tax on all imported goods.
