  • U.S. department store retailer continues Canadian expansion

    Nordstrom is continuing to grow its footprint in Canada.     The retailer on Friday opened its store at CF Toronto Eaton Centre, the company's second international flagship location since opening at Pacific Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, last fall.     
  • Tiffany names former railway exec as new finance head

    Tiffany & Co. has hired Mark Erceg to become its next executive VP and CFO, effective Oct. 18, 206.   Erceg, 47, who will be responsible for the company’s worldwide financial, indirect procurement and information technology functions, replaces Tiffany’s former CFO who left the retailer in May.   Previously, Erceg was with Canadian Pacific Railway Limited, where he has served as executive VP and CFO since May 2015.  
  • Macerich opens its rebuilt San Francisco ‘fortress’

    It was already generating $700 per square foot in revenue, but Broadway Plaza in San Francisco’s East Bay got a complete makeover from owner Macerich that was unveiled last week. Fireworks and a performance by Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray accompanied the ribbon-cutting.   Gross leasing area was expanded to beyond 900,000 sq. ft. and more than 50 new stores inhabit the open-air center that debuted in 1951. Nordstrom, Neiman-Marcus, and Macy’s anchor the plaza that Macerich has owned for the last 30 years.  
  • Breitling Boutique opens at WTC

    Swiss watchmaker Breitling opened its boutique at Westfield World Trade Center in New York and promises to make it an all-senses experience for shoppers.  
  • Unexpected drop for Signet Jewelers

    Signet Jewelers Ltd. reported its first drop in same-store sales in six years in its second quarter as the company continues to deal with rumors that it swapped expensive diamonds for cheaper stones.   Signet, whose banners include Zale, Kay Jewelers and Jared, posted a 2.3% drop in same-store sales in the quarter ended July 30. Wall Street analysts had expected a slight increase.   Net sales fell 2.6% to $1.37 billion.  
  • Time Equities acquires Utah Mall for $69.5 million

    In what it says is part of an expansion into the western United States, New York-based Time Equities Inc. (TEI) purchased the Newgate Mall in Ogden, Utah from General Growth Properties for $69.5 million.   The 718,035-sq.-ft. mall is anchored by Burlington Coat Factory, Cinemark, Dillard’s, and Sears. TEI reports it is 98% leased with approximately 100 tenants. Bath & Body Works, Kay Jewelers, Gymboree, and Victoria’s Secret are among those on the roster.  
  • Schimenti Construction to unveil nine new stores at One World Trade Center

    Schimenti Construction will play a major role in the opening of the Westfield World Trade Center retail center and transportation hub in downtown Manhattan on Aug. 16.    The Ridgefield, Conn.-based firm served as the general contractor for nine stores in the new retail and center, developing spaces for Banana Republic, H&M, Fossil, Victoria’s Secret, Under Armour, COS, Breitling, & Other Stories, and Cole Haan.  
  • 100-year-old jewelry chain to close all stores

    Rethinking its earlier turnaround plans, a century-old Canadian jewelry chain has announced it will shutter all stores.    Winnipeg-based Ben Moss Jewellers, which has sold mid-to-high-priced jewelry since 1910, said it will close the 54-unit chain and has launched going-out-of-business sales that began on Saturday, July 30.     The liquidation efforts are being handled by Gordon Brothers Canada, ULC and Hilco Global (through its Canadian division, Merchant Retail Solutions).  
  • Specialty jeweler steps up store expansion

    Alex and Ani is ramping up its store growth.   The Cranston, Rhode Island-based retailer plans to open 27 new locations in North America by the end of 2016, giving it a total of some 90 stores.     With the majority of its stores located on the East Coast, Alex and Ani, which is privately held, is now looking further afield. It will make its Southern California debut this fall, in Orange County.    
  • Stiles completes Coral Ridge Center in Fort Lauderdale

    The Enclave Shops at Coral Ridge outside of Fort Lauderdale is complete and its Fresh Market anchor has opened its doors. Its developer, Stiles, partnered with local businessman Phil Smith to build the surrounding residential community, The Enclave at Coral Ridge Country Club.   The Fresh Market has been a draw to other prospective retail tenants at the 27,300-sq.-ft. center, according to Stiles VP of realty Mike Carpenter.
