  • A&P boosts merchandising, marketing team

    MONTVALE, N.J. — Bankrupt grocer A&P, which just revealed plans to shutter 32 stores in six states, has bolstered its merchandising and marketing team with the appointment of six new executives.

    A&P filed for bankruptcy in December 2010 and is in the midst of a turnaround aimed at reducing structural operating costs and enhancing value for shoppers. On Feb. 15, the company announced it is seeking court approval to close 32 stores by the end of the company's fiscal first quarter.

  • Kroger EVP Don Becker dies

    CINCINNATI — Supermarket giant Kroger announced company EVP, Don Becker, died Wednesday after suffering an aneurysm. He was 62 years old.

  • Report: U.S. initial jobless claims rise to 410,000 last week

    Washington, D.C. -- A report released Thursday by the Labor Department said that applications for jobless benefits increased by 25,000 to 410,000 in the week ended Feb. 12, exceeding the 400,000 median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.

    The filings increase indicates that labor market will take time to develop.

    The total number of people receiving unemployment insurance was little changed, while those collecting extended payments decreased.

    Enterprising television reporters at KGTV in San Diego caused Walmart some grief this week when they uncovered that prices were ringing up incorrectly on some items and customers were not being offered a $3 refund in keeping with a 2008 court order.   • Foot Locker names Questrom to board

    New York City -- Foot Locker said Thursday it has named Allen I. Questrom, along with Guillermo Marmol, to its board of directors, bringing the total number of directors to 11.

    Questrom, the former chairman and CEO of J.C. Penney Co., Barneys New York and Federated Dept. Stores, now Macy’s, is currently a senior advisor to Lee Equity Partners.

    Marmol is president of Marmol & Associates, and has a long background in information technology and systems.

  • Coyote Management names senior leasing exec

    Addison, Texas -- Coyote Management, L.P. said that Jim Adkins has joined its management team as the new senior leasing specialist.

    Adkins will office at Lakeshore Mall in Gainesville, Ga.

    Before joining Coyote Management, Adkins was VP retail leasing for Bull Realty.

  • Borders files for Chapter 11

    New York City -- Borders Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Wednesday. The troubled bookseller plans to close 30%, or about 200, of its most underperforming stores during the next few weeks. The long-expected filing will allow Borders to access new capital and reorganize its operations, Borders Group president Mike Edwards said in a statement.

  • Regis selects PeopleAnswers’ pre-employment selection software

    Dallas -- PeopleAnswers and Regis Corp. have announced a software licensing agreement for Regis to use PeopleAnswers as its new talent assessment software for selecting and hiring salon stylists and managers. The expected results are decreased turnover, increased customer visits and sales as well as lower operating costs.
