  • Tips for Complying with the New Overtime Rules

    In response to public concern that wages at the low end of the pay scale were slow to rise, particularly for store managers and assistant store managers, the United States Department of Labor (DOL) updated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) regulations defining which white collar workers must be paid overtime pay.     The DOL estimates that more than 4 million employees nationwide who are not currently paid overtime will now have to be paid overtime, and the majority of those will be employees of retail stores and restaurants. 
  • Canal Street Market set to open in Manhattan

    A food hall-cum-retail bazaar called Canal Street Market is set to open at the northern edge of Chinatown in downtown Manhattan, just south of SoHo and Tribeca.   Developer Philip Chong is claiming the site will be the first combined food and retail experience in this section of New York. A food hall will feature about a dozen options, including Yori Nori, a new concept from the owners of Korila and Mokbar, plus Davey’s Ice Cream and Boba Guy.  
  • Dunkin’ Donuts nabs McDonald’s veteran for executive role

    A longtime McDonald’s veteran has joined the fast-growing Dunkin’ Donuts.    Dunkin' Brands Group, parent company of Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins, announced that David Hoffmann has been appointed president of Dunkin' Donuts U.S. and Canada, effective Oc. 3.   
  • New England retailer closing stores early for presidential debate

    The CEO of Jordan’s Furniture wants folks to watch the upcoming presidential debate, which is scheduled for Sept. 26 from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. EST.  
  • Magnolia Bakery, six others, open at New York outlet center

    Magnolia Bakery, the Greenwich Village shop that ignited the cupcake craze with its appearance on "Sex in the City," opens this week at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley, New York.   This is the first storefront for Magnolia on the East Coast, aside from its original location. It maintains shops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Honolulu, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates.  
  • Macomb Mall Shops sold

    Mid-America Real Estate Corp. announced it had brokered the sale of the Macomb Mall Shops in Roseville, Michigan, for $3.6 million.   Lormax Stern Development Company of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, was the seller. The purchaser was an unnamed private developer.   The 8,074-sq.-ft. center, located at the northwest corner of Gratiot Avenue and Masonic Boulevard in Roseville, houses AT&T, Chipotle, and Potbelly’s.
  • Eataly entering new market

    Eataly is taking its Italian food marketplace format to Canada.   The company announced plans to open its first Canadian location in early 2019, as an anchor tenant of the newly renovated Manulife Centre in Toronto.   Eataly, which combines food markets, restaurants, and eateries, will span three stories for a total space of 50,000 sq. ft.  
  • Pet giant lures former Restoration Hardware exec

    Petco appointed retail veteran John Zavada as senior VP and CIO.   In his new position, Zavada will lead Petco's information technology strategies, teams and projects, including the company's business process optimization and enterprise program management office.    Prior to joining Petco, Zavada served as senior VP and CIO at Restoration Hardware. He also held CIO positions at Guitar Center, Big Lots, Limited Inc., and Victoria's Secret Stores.
