  • Woodbury’s Anything but Common

    In the course of interviewing experts for this month’s open-air report, I heard two admiring references to Woodbury Common. It wasn’t the first time I’d heard the Simon Premium Outlet center used as an exemplar of traits modern retail should strive for — things like great customer experience, well-curated stores, and good food. I thought it time that I take a drive up to Orange County, N.Y., and see what all the fuss was about.

    Status: Open and operating, but includes a vacant parcel that has approval for future development of up to 62,000 sq. ft. of mixed-use space

  • New partnership further streamlines in-store digital payments

    A new digital payment process promises to improve in-store experiences, deliver operational efficiencies and create more consistency cross-channel.   Mastercard and Oracle are joining forces to expand the card issuer’s QKR! with Masterpass mobile app, a platform that enables consumers to seamlessly order and pay for goods and services via their smartphone. Targeting retail stores, restaurants and hotels, the platform reduces friction and drives more security for the consumer.  
  • Bartaco to make Texas debut at Trademark property

    Bartaco, an expanding food and beverage concept that combines beer, fresh-squeezed juices, and yes, tacos, will debut in Texas at Trademark Property’s WestBend development in Fort Worth.   The mixed-use facility just completed construction on its first phase, which includes office as well as retail space and aims to create a new hub of activity near the campus of Texas Christian University. It features new landscaping, gathering areas along the Trinity River and Trinity Trails, along with a rotating public art program.
  • Report: Robo-baristas hit San Francisco

    A new coffee shop is open in San Francisco. The blend of the day: artisan coffee and automated technology.   Taking a page from the AmazonGo experience, Cafe X is an automated coffee shop that opened in San Francisco’s Metreon mall on Jan. 30, according to the Los Angeles Times.   
  • Pret to add wine bar and four new locations in NYC

    Pret a Manger has signed leases for four new stores in Manhattan and renewed leases on three others, reported RKF, which handled the lease agreements.   In its third location at Penn Station, Pret will debut its wine bar concept for the first time in the U.S. This shop will be located near the station entrance on 34th Street and 7th Avenue. The fast-casual chain’s other new locations in the Big Apple will be on West 27th Street in Chelsea, Park Avenue and 39th Street, and in Midtown at 53rd and Broadway.  
  • Restaurant giant in $1.8 billion acquisition

    Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is about to get a new owner.    Restaurant Brands International Inc., owner of Burger King and Tim Hortons, announced it would acquire Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen for $1.8 billion in cash.  
  • Restaurants at retail: What’s the recipe for success?

    Restaurants are the current darlings of the shopping center developers. It was reported last year that Americans spent more money at bars and restaurants (a total of nearly $55 billion) than they did on groceries. In case you were wondering how big a deal that is, consider this: It was the first time in recorded history that that was the case. But that’s not the only reason that shopping center owners are mad for restaurants. They are also hubs of social activity that contribute to that all-important and often elusive experiential energy.
