  • Lake Nona moves into next phase of development

    In Orlando, Florida, one of America’s fastest-growing communities is getting ready to take the next step. Lake Nona – an 8,000-acre, 11-square-mile master-planned community that has already completed more than $3 billion in construction encompassing 7.1 million sq. ft. of world-class residential and commercial facilities over the last 8 years – is moving forward with the next phase of what will ultimately be a 3.8 million-sq.-ft. central commercial district: Lake Nona Town Center.

    One of the most successful formats in the history of retailing is about to get a makeover.        Apple Inc. unveiled its vision for the future of its retail empire, opening a two-level flagship in San Francisco with new design flourishes and service elements that will be rolled out to Apple stores worldwide.     
  • Starbucks opens store with job training site in Ferguson, Missouri

    Starbucks has opened a store in Ferguson, Missouri, a city that was rocked by racial unrest in 2014, as part of its ongoing initiative to open stores in at least 15 lower-income U.S. communities by 2018.

    The opening follows the launch of a similar store in the Jamaica section of Queens, New York, in March. Both are part of a national plan to provide local jobs, create training opportunities for youth, and support efforts to rebuild and revitalize communities.

  • Shopping Centers in the Digital Age

    One of my favorite times of the year is teaching at the ICSC University of Shopping Centers. I co-teach “Marketing & Social Media: Shopping Centers in the Digital Age” with Tim O’Connell, assistant VP, director of digital marketing and communications, at RPAI. While we present stats, trends and case studies, what energizes me most are the collaborative class discussions on how other shopping centers owners are progressing with their social media efforts.

  • Amazon’s expanding footprint includes new fulfillment centers, college pickup locations

    Amazon.com continues to expand its fulfillment center network along with its fleet of college pickup locations.

    The e-tail giant will open two new fulfillment centers in New Jersey, in Florence and Carteret. The new centers will create more than 2,000 new full-time jobs in the Garden State, where Amazon already employs more than 5,500 full-time workers.

  • Kohl’s expands caring initiative with new merchandise

    The more than $300 million that Kohl’s has raised through an innovative cause merchandising program is set to go even higher as the retail offer a new product lineup through the end of June.

    Kohl’s introduced a new line of Kohl’s Care products including books and plush characters priced at $5 where 100% of the net profit from the products goes to benefit children’s health initiatives nationwide.

  • Walmart and Aspen funding retail worker research

    The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists “retail salesperson” as the most common job in America, but the retail industry is evolving rapidly as is the nature of work. A new $5.5 million research grant from Walmart and the Aspen Institute aims to understand how.

    The largest portion of the grant is dedicated to exploring alternative models to provide career pathways for frontline retail workers, according to a statement from Walmart and the Aspen Institute, an organization known for pioneering new approaches to complex problems.
