  • Kimco completes renovation and announces new tenants

    Kimco’s $18 million renovation of Wilde Lake in Columbia, Maryland, has been completed and the mixed-use development is welcoming three new retail tenants.   Starbucks will open both a café and a drive-thru this year and Salons by JC plans a fall opening. Dynamic Dental Care opened in December. Wilde Lake has 230 residential units, 30,000 sq. ft. of office space, and 41,000 sq. ft. of retail.

    An historic department store building that closed its doors and has been empty for 30 years — long enough for a tree to start growing inside it — has been given a brand new lease on life.  
  • Plans for another Amazon warehouse underway

    Amazon is getting ready to break ground on yet another new fulfillment center — its first in Colorado.    The one million-sq.-ft. facility being constructed in Aurora is expected to create more than 1,000 new full-time jobs. Associates at the Aurora warehouse will pick, pack and ship larger customer items, such as sports equipment, musical instruments and furniture.  
  • Accenture in tech collaboration with Council of Fashion Designers

    The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Accenture are collaborating to help shape how the fashion industry integrates technology and consumer insights into its business practices.    Combining the creativity within CFDA’s membership with Accenture’s expertise in customer experience, strategy, insights and technology, the two organizations will create talent-development programs for today’s designers and tomorrow’s retailers.  
  • NRF launches job training initiative

    The NRF Foundation has brought together leading retailers and non-profits to launch a job training and credentialing initiative called Rise Up (Retail Industry Skills & Education).   The program is designed to help people — regardless of education, background, economic means or age — acquire the skills they need to secure jobs in retail and advance into promising careers in every aspect of retail, from in-store to digital and mobile commerce, according to the NRF.  
  • Edens sells center near University of Virginia

    O’Connor Capital Partners has acquired The Shops at Stonefield in Charlottesville, Virginia, from Edens for $121 million.   The 231,761-sq.-ft. Town Center portion of the property, which is two miles from the campus of the University of Virginia, opened in 2013. A 33,422-sq.-ft. Northside portion was completed in 2016. Key Tenants include Trader Joe’s, Regal Cinema, Pottery Barn, Brooks Brothers, and Bluemercury.  
  • Giving back with feedback

    The National Retail Federation is donating $1 (up to $10,000) to RetilROI for every unique session review on the NRF mobile app at the association’s annual “Big Show” in New York City.    RetailROI (the Retail Orphan Initiative) is a charity started by the retail community to help orphans and vulnerable children worldwide through clean water, education and computer learning projects.
