LIDL
Lidl has more than 170 stores across nine East Coast states and Washington, D.C.

Lidl US is expanding its presence in New York City via an agreement with a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable housing.

The discount grocer has signed a leasing agreement with Grand Street Guild for a 23,000-sq.-ft. location on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, at 408 Grand St. It will be Lidl US’ third location in the Big Apple.

Construction on the property will start soon. The store is expected to open in summer 2025.

Grand Street Guild, which is affiliated with Catholic Homes of the Archdiocese of New York, has provided affordable housing for thousands of families on New York City’s Lower East Side for 50 years. Home to more than 1,500 residents in 600 units, this HUD-sponsored complex is currently composed of three 26-story towers, located at 410 Grand Street, 460 Grand Street, and 131 Broome Street. A fourth building at 165 Broome Street featuring an additional 232 fully affordable apartments will open later this year.

“It was clear from the beginning that our mission – to deliver high quality, affordable groceries at affordable prices and Grand Street Guild’s mission – to provide high quality, affordable housing were the perfect match,” said Or Raitses, senior director real estate at Lidl US. “ We thank the Grand Street Guild for their dedication to the community and for their partnership to bring these basic needs to residents on the Lower East Side.”

Lidl US will use Marin Architects as the official architects for the project. CBRE represented Lidl in the transaction.

“High-quality affordable housing is our primary mission,” said Alicia Carmona, executive director, Grand Street Guild. “ We also strive to deliver programs and services that make Grand Street Guild a wonderful place to raise a family or age with dignity and ease. Having an internationally lauded grocery store like Lidl US within easy walking distance to our residents is a huge plus for all concerned. We look forward to Lidl US becoming a must-shop destination for all in our diverse community.”
