Ikea strengthens delivery capability with AI platform acquisition

Ikea is investing in AI logistics technology.

Ikea Retail Group is purchasing a logistics technology company.

Ingka Investments, the investment arm of Ingka Group, a strategic partner in the Ikea franchise system with 51 U.S. retail stores, has acquired U.S.-based logistics solutions provider Locus for an undisclosed sum.

This strategic investment is intended to strengthen Ikea’s digital capabilities to help provide customers with seamless home delivery services. Previously, Ikea has relied on multiple third-party providers to support home delivery.

Locus offers an artificial intelligence-based logistics management platform with features including advanced route optimization, real-time tracking, and the smart use of vehicles and resources.

By integrating these Locus AI capabilities into its enterprise, Ikea intends to enhance efficiency across the entire supply chain, from capacity management and optimization to last-mile execution.

In addition to improving its global capacity to deliver home furnishings to customers globally, Ikea also intends to utilize Locus technology to support its ambition of creating a faster and smarter distribution network.

"Our vision is to create a better everyday life for the many, and that includes delivering products when and how customers want them,” said Parag Parekh, Global chief delivery officer for Ikea Retail (Ingka Group). “This acquisition strengthens the digital capabilities required to meet rising customer expectations, while ensuring the quality and reliability Ikea is known for."

This acquisition comes as the retailer’s online sales have grown to represent 28% of its total retail sales in fiscal year 2024, up from 11% in fiscal year 2019. Ikea intends the integration of Locus's technology to further enhance its ability to meet this growth, complementing earlier strategic technology investments such as the Taskrabbit assembly platform, which it acquired in 2017, as well as the Made4net warehouse management solutions provider.
