Home Depot to offer real-time tracking of big and bulky deliveries
The Home Depot is launching what it says is the home improvement industry’s first real-time delivery tracking tool for big and bulky deliveries.
The world's largest home improvement retailer will release the tracker for big and bulky materials by the end of the first quarter of 2026. The solution is aimed at professional renovators, remodelers, builders and specialty tradespeople, a customer group Home Depot refers to as "Pros."
Once live, the feature will be available on the Home Depot mobile app and e-commerce site and provide minute-by-minute updates on deliveries, including visibility into the truck route and remaining stops.
Live tracking is provided by the new Home Depot Driver Handheld application, which transmits real-time GPS data directly from the delivery truck ans pinpoints the truck's location on a live map. Real-time delivery tracking is already live for consumers ordering large appliances.
"Last-mile logistics for large, flatbed deliveries have been a persistent blind spot for retailers delivering building materials to Pros," said Dee Walk, senior VP of enterprise delivery experience. “The Home Depot is focused on removing friction at every step of the customer experience, and we know that every minute counts on a busy job site. With the new real-time delivery tracker, we're pleased to pioneer a new level of transparency with technology that will give our Pro customers peace of mind, and free them up to focus on their business and the job at hand."
Home Depot serves pro customers
Home Depot has been making a concerted effort to obtain the business of home improvement industry professionals. Some examples in the past 12 months or so include:
- Material List Builder AI, an application designed to help professional renovators, remodelers, builders and specialty tradespeople create actionable project material lists within minutes.
- An AI solution called Blueprint Takeoffs, which is designed to provide professional renovators, remodelers and builders with faster, more accurate and cost-effective material lists and estimates – also known as "takeoffs" – for single-family project blueprints.
- The acquisition of GMS Inc. through its specialty trade distribution subsidiary, SRS Distribution Inc. GMS is a leading distributor of specialty building products including drywall, ceilings, steel framing and other complementary products related to remodeling and construction projects in residential and commercial end markets.
- Teaming up with StrataTech Education Group (StrataTech), an operator of skilled trade schools, to expand its Path to Pro program, which aims to educate more people in the skilled trades and help them find careers in the home improvement industry.
- Opening four new distribution centers geared toward serving pro customers in Detroit, southern Los Angeles, San Antonio and Toronto. The centers stock large, bulky merchandise such as lumber, insulation and roofing shingles.
