  • Target, Instacart take Thanksgiving on the road

    Purchasing all the ingredients needed for a Thanksgiving meal just got easier for San Francisco residents.

    Target and Instacart are partnering to provide a food truck featuring Thanksgiving recipes and coupon codes, as well as grocery delivery, in downtown San Francisco.

  • Survey: Retailers see need for innovation spending

    Retailers are feeling confident about their overall financial situations, but less so about omnichannel investment.

    This is a main finding from the 7th annual CIT Group Retail Outlook study conducted among 250 senior middle-market retail executives by Harris Poll. Although respondents are generally projecting growing sales and revenue, many feel significant investment toward innovation in an omnichannel strategy -- including website, mobile and social media channels -- will be needed to remain competitive.

    At one point or another, anyone discussing the future of personalization in offline retail has quoted the film Minority Report, where virtual billboards scan Tom Cruise, and immediately customize their message. The virtual assistant in Gap refers to the last time he entered the store, and inquires about his recent purchase.

    Now, 13 years later, some of these technologies are becoming mainstream. For example, large retailers like Target and venues like the new Levi’s Stadium are equipped with beacons to customize your experience.

  • Former Target design manager joins firm

    Leo A Daly announced that Mary Schaffer has joined the firm’s Minneapolis office as director of architecture. In this role, she oversees scheduling, staffing, mentorship, and quality review for the office’s architectural services.

    Shaffer joins Leo A Daly from the University of Minnesota, where she helped manage capital projects and oversee all aspects of design and planning.

    She was also principal design project-manager for Target Corporation, where she led retail and corporate projects in India and the United States.

  • As Black Friday nears, retailers say yes to Turkey Day

    With a little over two weeks until Black Friday weekend, Best Buy, HHgregg and other retailers are hoping many U.S. consumers have made shopping after Thanksgiving dinner a holiday tradition.

    The consumer electronics retailers joined a growing list of retailers that released their Thanksgiving 
    plans this week. Both Best Buy and HHgregg have decided to keep their same holiday sales plans from last year.

  • Target to offer 10 days of Black Friday deals

    Target is planning to not only open on Thanksgiving Day but also roll out a new “10 Days of Deals” promotion to increase traffic to its stores.

    As part of the “10 Days of Deals,” the retailer announced it will offer daily discounts on electronics, kitchenware, toys and more from Nov. 22 through Dec. 1. In addition, guests will have access to a Black Friday presale on Nov. 25.

  • Sprouts is showing Whole Foods how it's done

    While Whole Foods Market and The Fresh Market struggle to eke out sales growth and profit, Sprouts Farmers Market is quietly emerging as a perennial winner in the grocery sector.

    Sprouts reported its third quarter results this week, and the company's financials exceeded company guidance and even Wall Street estimates.

    The grocery chain reported results for the 13-week third quarter ended Sept. 27 that included:

    • Net sales of $903.1 million, an 18% increase from the same period in 2014
