    The design of Starbucks’ flagship in the new Disneytown at Shanghai Disney Resort was inspired by the craft of coffee and the magic of Disney — and the latest in ordering technology.   Located in the entertainment district just outside the main entrance to the theme park,  the store is topped with a specially crafted wind vane that evokes the playfulness of Disney with the iconic Starbucks siren.

    The idea of Starbucks serving as a “third place” outside of home and work has been reinforced with a new add-in to Microsoft Outlook.

These retailers understand that one way to energize a fervent fan base is to offer a singular fan base. Here are a few examples:   
  • Gap exec moving over to specialty athletic retailer

    A store development executive from Gap Inc. has been tapped to head up real estate for Foot Locker.   Foot Locker announced the appointment of Scott Martin as senior VP – real estate, effective June 13. Martin succeeds Jeffrey Berk, who retired in April after almost 20 years with the company.

  • Starbucks goes to the bond market—to raise money for sustainability

    Starbucks Corp. has turned to the bond market to fund its sustainable-coffee efforts. The chain issued a $500 million U.S. corporate sustainability bond to fund projtects that will support ethical coffee sourcing. The 10-year, 2.45 percent senior notes, due 2026, will fund programs that ensure coffee is grown and distributed in a way that can be maintained over the long run, such as providing fair pay for workers and protection for wildlife.
  • Former Starbucks COO plans new multi-use venue

    Troy Alstead, the longtime Starbucks executive who resigned as COO in February 2016, is ready to take his next professional step.

    According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, Alstead is planning to open a 57,000-sq.-ft. “sustainable social hub” in Gig Harbor, Washington. Offerings will include a restaurant, bar and café as well as a 20-lane bowling alley and meeting and party rooms.

  • Starbucks opens store with job training site in Ferguson, Missouri

    Starbucks has opened a store in Ferguson, Missouri, a city that was rocked by racial unrest in 2014, as part of its ongoing initiative to open stores in at least 15 lower-income U.S. communities by 2018.

    The opening follows the launch of a similar store in the Jamaica section of Queens, New York, in March. Both are part of a national plan to provide local jobs, create training opportunities for youth, and support efforts to rebuild and revitalize communities.
