Sam's Club

  • Flu shots now available at Walmart, Sam's Club

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart and Sam's Club are offering flu shots clinics to customers through their partnership with Mollen Immunization Clinics.

  • An untapped opportunity at Sam’s Club

The leadership transition Costco announced this week was hardly unexpected considering outgoing CEO Jim Sinegal is 75, but it does underscore what arguably has been one of the greatest distinctions between Costco and Sam’s clubs for the past 25 years, namely the stability of senior leadership.

  • Sam's Club hosts free diabetes health screenings

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club is offering free diabetes health screenings for both adults and children on Sept. 10, the retailer announced.

The free screenings will be held in Sam's Club pharmacies nationwide from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include glucose, A1C, blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) tests. Glucose tests are not available, however, in Tennessee, Maryland and Hawaii, Sam's Club noted.

  • Walmart U.S. CEO Simon rallies veterans to lead 'American Renewal'

Bentonville, Ark. -- Walmart U.S. President and CEO Bill Simon addressed attendees at the American Legion's 93rd National Convention on Wednesday, telling fellow Americans, veterans and Legionnaires that Walmart would create jobs in the U.S. by hiring more than 15,000 people to work in about 100 new and expanded Walmart stores by fiscal year's end.

  • The future of food

Picture this setting. The neatly manicured grounds of the spectacular Broadmoor resort are underfoot, the Rocky Mountains are in the background, and the sky above Colorado Springs is a crisp blue. Hundreds of dark-suited senior executives are milling about an early evening reception, sipping wine as white-gloved waiters offer curious looking hors d'oeuvres.

  • Comp sales acceleration may be ending at Sam’s

Sam’s Club run of six consecutive quarters of accelerating same-store sales growth will come to an end in the third quarter unless the warehouse club operator exceeds guidance provided earlier this week after reporting a 5% second-quarter comp increase.

Even though Sam’s president and CEO Brian Cornell noted that momentum remains strong, he added that “it’s important to remember that it was in the third quarter last year that our comp performance began to accelerate, so our comparisons for the back half will be more challenging.”

  • True strength of Sam’s membership trends hard to discern

There was a lot of talk about the favorable membership trends Sam’s Club experienced during the second quarter, thanks to membership and other income that increased 2.5% to $728 million. That prompted Wal-Mart Stores Inc., president and CEO Mike Duke to include Sam’s Club among the list of positive developments he called out regarding the company’s second quarter performance.

“I am also pleased with the momentum in membership income, as Sam’s improves its renewals and upgrades,” Duke said.

  • Wal-Mart profits rise in Q2, U.S. same-store sales flat

Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores reported Tuesday that profit for the quarter ended July 31 rose to $3.8 billion, up from $3.6 billion in the year-ago period. Overall revenue, up 5.4% to $109.37 billion, topped Wall Street’s expectations.

Yet, the world’s largest retailer is feeling the pinch from a tight economy that is slow to loosen. Wal-Mart U.S., the company's biggest unit, posted a 0.9% drop in same-store sales, the ninth consecutive quarterly drop and beneath analysts' estimates for a 0.6% fall.
