  • H-E-B Goes Beyond Products and Pricing to Connect With Customers

    Scott McClelland seems an unlikely candidate for his picture to appear under a "Why Is This Man Smiling?" headline. As spokesperson and president of the Houston food/drug division of Texas-based grocery store chain H-E-B, McClelland has plenty of reasons to be worried.

    At one point or another, anyone discussing the future of personalization in offline retail has quoted the film Minority Report, where virtual billboards scan Tom Cruise, and immediately customize their message. The virtual assistant in Gap refers to the last time he entered the store, and inquires about his recent purchase.

    Now, 13 years later, some of these technologies are becoming mainstream. For example, large retailers like Target and venues like the new Levi’s Stadium are equipped with beacons to customize your experience.

    Anyone who thinks Michael Jordan’s star may have dimmed in the 10-plus years since he retired from professional basketball, should think again.

    Nike on Saturday, Oct. 24, in Chicago, debuts its first-ever store dedicated entirely to its Jordan Brand, and fans of the sports legend, along with sneaker enthusiasts, lined up for days in anticipation of the opening. Nike also plans to open Jordan Brand stores in additional locations, including New York, Los Angeles and Toronto.

    Nike has brought its “community store” concept to California, opening a 19,000-sq.-ft.-plus location in East Los Angeles.

  • Lululemon restructures executive team

    Lululemon Athletica’s chief product officer has left the company and other key executives are in new roles as the company looks to increase innovation and execute a 10 year vision.

    The operator of 336 stores named expanded the responsibilities of CFO Stuart Haselden and he now adds the title of executive VP of operations. Haselden joined the company early this year after serving as CFO of J. Crew. The company has also initiated a search to fill the newly created position of chief supply chain officer.

    Both channels specialize in limited and special edition sneakers, and the type of exclusive, hard-to-find styles that sneaker enthusiasts (“sneakerheads”) are willing to shell out thousands of dollars for.
