  • J.C. Penney joins the holiday marathon, and adds low price guarantee

    J.C. Penney will celebrate Thanksgiving with an all-night shopping spree — complete with new shopping carts.    The retailer will open at 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving, similar to last year, and remain open until Friday, Nov. 25 at 10 p.m. Online shoppers will get a jump on holiday deals, with Penney’s Black Friday sale prices available online the day before, starting at midnight Nov. 23.  
  • Holiday forecast: Digital promotions to help drive in-store purchases

    Holiday spending is expected to spike by a solid 4%.   That’s according to the “2016 Holiday Season Forecast,” an annual report from investment firm JLL that is based on responses from 2,800 shoppers across 31 shopping centers.  
  • It’s anchors aweigh at PREIT in strategic repositioning

    PREIT’s stated strategic shift to pack its portfolio with more relevant anchors is moving ahead at full steam.   At its Cumberland Mall in New Jersey this month, Dick’s Sporting Goods opened in a 50,000-sq.-ft. space vacated by J.C. Penney. In December, another former Penney’s space will debut as a Round One Entertainment location, and being readied for 2017 openings at other PREIT malls are Home Goods and Field & Stream stores, a Whole Foods Market, and a Legoland Discovery Center.  
  • New J.C. Penney location emerges in San Bernardino

    In an age when mall owners’ overriding challenge is what to do with the space left by departed department stores, one 50-year-old center in California landed a new one.   Penney last week opened a 119,000-sq.-ft. location at Inland Center in San Bernardino, joining co-anchors Macy’s, Sears, and Forever 21. The fully renovated space it occupies was last home to Gottshalks.

  • Michigan center sold for $11.5 million

    Southfield, Michigan-based Versa Development has purchased Cascade Crossing in Sault Ste. Marie for $11.5 million.    Mid-America Real Estate Corp. handled the sale on behalf of the seller, DDR Corp.   Situated at the junction of Interstate 75 and 3 Mile Road in the Canadian border town, the 276,361-sq.-ft. center is anchored by Kohl’s, J.C. Penney, TJ Maxx, and Jo-Ann Fabrics.  
  • Macy’s stays committed to Thanksgiving Day shopping

    Macy’s is not joining the ranks of retailers and mall operators who plan to close their doors on Turkey Day.     That’s according to BestBlackFriday.com, which tracks retailers' holiday hours and promotions. The research company said it received confirmation from five U.S. shopping centers that their Macy's locations would open at 5 p.m. Thursday.
