  • Big mall owner CBL launches a rebranding campaign

    Malls are not going away entirely, but the word “mall” may be an endangered concept.   CBL Properties, one of the nation’s biggest mall operators, with 121 of them in 27 states, has announced a rebranding campaign that that reflects a new strategic direction focused on operating community gathering places, not mere shopping centers.

  • PREIT sells Altoona mall for $33 million

    PREIT, which has long been pursuing a strategy of unloading underperforming malls from its portfolio, announced it has sold the Logan Valley Mall for $33.2 million net of credits issued to the buyer. The new owner’s identity was not released.   The Altoona, Pennsylvania, mall -- anchored by Macy's, J.C. Penney and Sears -- had been turning in sales-per-square-foot of $324 versus an average of $475 for the rest of the PREIT portfolio.  
  • Former NRF exec joins Aptos as retail strategist

    Aptos has tapped an industry veteran to assist retailers on their transformation journeys.   The retail technology solution provider has named Vicki Cantrell as its retail transformation officer. In this newly created position, she will oversee Aptos functions for business consulting and strategy, value engineering, and strategic account management. Cantrell will also leverage her retail background to advise and support Aptos customers as they reinvent their businesses for omnichannel growth, profitability and customer loyalty.

  • Hudson's Bay Co. taps former Penney exec as CFO

    The parent company of Hudson's Bay, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue has appointed a 25-year retail veteran as its new finance head.   HBC named Edward Record as CFO, effective August 28, 2017. He succeeds Paul Beesley, who, as previously announced is leaving HBC.   Record joins HBC after more than three years as CFO of J. C. Penney Company. In July, he announced he was stepping down from the company to "pursue other interests."  
  • Upcoming store will be a first for Wegmans

    Wegmans Food Markets is expanding its footprint with a new concept.    In a first for the 101-year-old grocer, Wegmans said it will open a two-level store, at Natick Mall, Natick, Mass., with direct access to the shopping center. The 134,000-sq.-ft. store will be located in a building that formerly housed one of the mall's anchors, J.C. Penney.
