  • Carphone loss widens for Best Buy U.K. joint venture

    London -- U.K. mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse Group PLC reported Tuesday that its loss for its Best Buy U.K. joint venture widened to $102 million in the year to March 31, compared with a loss of $34 million in the prior year. CEO Roger Taylor has warned analysts to expect further losses of between $82 million and $98 million this year.

  • Landlords and retailers gather to discuss greening

    Washington, D.C. -- The Retail Industry Leaders Association, the International Council of Shopping Centers and Paladino and Co., announced Tuesday a collaborative discussion among retailers and commercial shopping center developers to bridge the current landlord and tenant divide that exists around creating sustainable, energy-efficient retail stores in the United States.

    Participants in the June 9 roundtable included Wal-Mart, Petco, Ann Taylor, Target, VF Corp., Best Buy, Westfield, Vornado and Kimco, among others.

  • Best Buy CEO’s pay package falls 51%

    New York City -- The CEO of Best Buy received a pay package worth about $5 million in the most recent fiscal year, half what he got the year before, according to a document the company filed Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Associated Press said.

    Brian Dunn, 50, received a base salary of $1 million and a performance-based bonus of $746,667, down 75% from his performance based bonus the year before. Dunn received option awards valued at $3.2 million when they were granted, down 48%.

    MINNEAPOLIS -- Best Buy said that it plans to open hundreds of wireless device stores, as well as expand online and in China in an effort to be more competitive as consumers up their online shopping. The chain is also scaling back the size of its signature namesake format. 

    In an analyst conference Thursday, the retailer unveiled plans to shrink square footage at big-box stores by 10% over the next three to five years, a move that Best Buy said will eventually save $70 million to $80 million annually.

  • Best Buy Q4 profit declines, adjusted results beat Street

    Minneapolis -- Best Buy Co. reported Thursday that net income for the quarter ended Feb. 26 fell 16% to $651 million, compared with $779 million in the year-ago period. However, adjusted results beat Wall Street expectations.

    The retailer cited restructuring costs and weak TV and other electronics sales for the performance decline.
