  • Walmart giving surpasses $1 billion

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart and its foundation gave more than $1 billion in cash and in-kind contributions throughout the last fiscal year, the company announced Monday. 

    It’s the most money and in-kind donations given by Walmart or any U.S. retailer in a fiscal year ever , according to the company. The growth in global giving was largely due to increased in-kind donations in the U.S. to local food banks and families impacted by disasters.

  • American Girl, Monster High drive Mattel Q1 results

    EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Key Mattel brands drove Mattel sales for the first quarter of 2013. 

    Mattel's net sales for the quarter were $996 million, up 7% compared to $928 million last year, and net income increased dramatically to $38.5 million, or $0.11 per share, compared to last year's first quarter net income of $7.8 million, or $0.02 per share.

  • Office Depot debuts citizenship site for Earth Month

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- Office Depot announced Thursday that it has debuted a new corporate citizenship website – Officedepotcitizenship.com – in recognition of Earth Month.

    The site provides information about the company’s various initiatives, including ethics, diversity and the environment, presented in an interactive format.

  • Upscale Maryland outlet center on the boards

    Clarksburg, Md. -- Tanger Factory Outlet Centers and Peterson Cos. said Wednesday that the pair will develop an upscale outlet center in Clarksburg, Md.

    The new outlet center, currently in the pre-development stage, will be branded as Tanger Outlets and located 27 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. and 36 miles west of Baltimore.

  • Target warns Q1 profit will fall short of forecast

    Minneapolis -- Target Corp. said Tuesday it will miss its first-quarter profit outlook as seasonal and weather-sensitive items underperformed.
     
    The retailer also said it now expects same-store sales to be flat in the quarter.

    Target’s quarterly results are slated to be reported on May 22.

     

  • Retail sales fall 0.4% in March

    New York - U.S. retail sales fell 0.4% in March, the biggest decrease in nine months, amid a slowdown in hiring and higher taxes. Excluding sales of autos, gas and building materials, core sales dropped 0.2% in March, following a 0.3% increase in January.

The capsule collection launches exclusively at select Banana Republic retail locations worldwide and online Aug. 6.

  • Retail sales slip by 0.4% in March

    NEW YORK — U.S. retail sales fell 0.4% in March, the biggest decrease in nine months, amid a slowdown in hiring and higher taxes. Excluding sales of autos, gas and building materials, core sales dropped 0.2% in March, following a 0.3% increase in January.
