  • Survey: How to compete against Amazon for holiday sales

    Although Amazon poses a major holiday sales threat, there are steps retailers can take to produce a merry season.   According to a new survey of 1,500 U.S. consumers by marketing platform provider Signal, 42% of respondents said Amazon will be their primary holiday gift destination. Consumers who use Amazon do so because it is easy (50%), because they are Prime members (36%), and because they like the product reviews and recommendations (29%).  
  • Father’s Day spending: Eight need-to-know items

    Father’s Day is Sunday, June 18, and retailers and dads alike will have reason to smile, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).    American adults who plan to consume this holiday will do so in a big way, spending an average of $169.60 at predominantly at physical retailers, according to ICSC’s most recent consumer survey.    Here are eight specific findings:  
  • Amazon ups holiday storage fees

    Amazon Marketplace sellers may want to run a little leaner this holiday season.

    According to Re/Code, Amazon has notified merchants its third-party Marketplace platform will raise its warehouse storage fees during November and December 2016. The e-tail giant experienced profit-damaging storage space shortages during the 2015 holiday season and is trying to avoid a repeat of the problem.
     

  • Index: Promotional intensity causing Q1 profit pressures

    Retailers’ margins could be under pressure during the first quarter as a new index tracking promotional selling shows full price sales have declined and promotional activity has increased.

    Retailers are relying heavily on discounts and promotions so for this year, continuing the trend from the 2015 holiday season of pulling the promotional lever far too often, according an analysis of $5 billion in consumer transactions from January through March conducted by DynamicAction.

  • Sears hopes to lure store shoppers with Mom, online pickup

    Sears Holdings has been having issues attracting shoppers to stores, as evidenced by the recent decision to close 78 brick-and-mortar locations.

    However, the department store retailer is not giving up on efforts to drive store traffic. Sears is combining the eternal appeal of Mom and its strong history of omnichannel customer service to give shoppers a good reason to visit their local store.

  • J.C. Penney gets social with mall shoppers

    The J.C. Penney Co. Inc. is teaming up with a well-known social network to help draw traffic and sales at select mall-based locations.

    According to Advertising Age, Penney will display digital Pinterest boards in 10 malls around the country as part of a Mothers’ Day promotion. The boards will display apparel, hair and beauty products that are available in nearby Penney stores at the mall. The promotion will also include featured in-person appearances by well-known fashion bloggers.

  • Lifestyle retailer to open flagship at Mall of America

    Anthropologie is coming to Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, in a big way.

    The brand, a division of Urban Outfitters, will open a 10,000-sq.-ft. flagship on the mall’s expanded first level. It is expected to open in time for the holiday season.

  • PREIT brings DICK'S Sporting Goods and Field & Stream to Viewmont Mall

    Preit has executed a lease that will bring Dick’s Sporting Goods and Field & Stream to Viewmont Mall, Scranton, Pennsylvania.

    The dual store format concept will replace the existing Sears at the property in 90,000 sq. ft. of space. Sears will close this July, with Dick’s Sporting Goods and Field & Stream scheduled to open for business for Holiday 2017.
