  • Men’s Wearhouse extends Jos. A. Bank offer to June 5

    Fremont, Calif. - The Men's Wearhouse has extended its all-cash tender offer for $65 per share for all of the currently outstanding shares of common stock of Jos. A. Bank to June 5, unless further extended. The tender offer was previously set to expire on May 21.

  • Sears Canada net loss expands in difficult Q1

    Toronto – Sears Canada more than doubled its net loss year-over-year to $75.2 million, from $31.2 million in a difficult first quarter of fiscal 2014. Expenses related to the closure of stores and severance of personnel played a major role in the growth of the retailer’s net loss.

  • Former P&G vice chair joins BCG as senior adviser

    The Boston Consulting Group has named former P&G vice chairman Dimitri Panayotopoulos as a senior adviser in its consumer practice.

    In his 37 years at P&G, Panayotopoulos was a cornerstone of the company’s global success and earned a reputation for relentlessly pushing boundaries. As vice chair global business units and more recently the adviser to the chairman and CEO, Panayotopoulos helped the company focus on breakthrough ideas, speed to market and large-scale transformation across all businesses.

  • Survey: Retailers expect, avoid job-hoppers

    Chicago – In many cases retailers have to come to expect “job-hoppers” who frequently change jobs, but in many cases they also avoid them. More than half of 182 retail hiring managers and human resource professionals (54%) polled in a recent CareerBuilder survey said they have hired a job-hopper and more than one-third (36%) said they have come to expect workers to job-hop.

  • PetSmart net income grows in Q1; same-store sales miss

    Phoenix – PetSmart Inc. posted a 1.3% increase in net income during the first quarter of fiscal 2014, rising to $104 million from $102 million in the first quarter of the prior year. Net sales increased 1.1% to $1.7 billion, but same-store sales missed Wall Street expectations by falling 0.6%.

    PetSmart cited a challenging and volatile consumer environment and a competitive market as contributing to its weaker-than-anticipated same-store sales results.

  • Study: Consumer spending passes $10 trillion

    Chicago - Renewed consumer spending is in line with pre-recession trends and consumer optimism is higher than it's been in years. In 2013, Mintel estimates that personal consumption expenditures on consumer goods reached $10 trillion for the first time.

  • Amazon.com gets top customer service marks

    Amazon.com took second place overall and was the highest-ranked retailer in the 2014 Temkin Customer Service Ratings, which rates 233 companies across 19 industries with 10,000 U.S. consumers. Other retailers in the top 12 include Chick-fil-A, Publix, H-E-B, Starbucks, Costco, QVC, and Trader Joe's.

    Retailers with the most improvement over last year's ratings are Apple Store, KFC, and Food Lion. Ace Hardware and Staples saw their Temkin Customer Service Ratings fall by 15 points or more between 2013 and 2014: No retailers placed at the bottom of the rankings.

  • Michaels Q1 sales up

    New York -- Michaels posted increases on both net and same-stores sales for the first quarter.

    Net sales increased 5.9% to $1.05 billion from $993 million during last year’s first quarter. Comparable store sales increased 3.8% driven by a 2.4% increase in the company's average ticket, a 1.3% increase in transactions and a 10 basis point positive impact from deferred custom framing revenue.
