  • Report: Carrefour CEO to take chairman reins

    Paris -- The Carrefour SA board of directors on Tuesday approved a plan for its CEO Lars Olofsson to also assume the role of chairman. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Olofsson will take over as current chairman Amaury de Seze announced Tuesday that he would step down.

    "The time has come to reunite the two functions," De Seze said. He will remain on Carrefour's board.

  • Aldi opens store in enclosed mall in suburban Chicago

    New York City -- Discount grocer Aldi has made its U.S. mall debut, opening in Westfield Chicago Ridge, an 800,000-sq.-ft. enclosed shopping center in Chicago Ridge, Ill. The mall is a property of The Westfield Group.

    The 20,000-sq.-ft. store offers the same prices and products as other Aldi stores, and also features the retailer’s current interior prototype elements. The store is entered through the mall entrances.

  • Borders hopes to name bidder by July 1

    New York City -- Borders Group hopes to name a bidder by July 1 and sell itself by the end of that month, according to bankruptcy court filings, the Associated Press reported. Forty stores previously targeted for closing are also getting a temporary reprieve.

    The retailer said in papers filed Friday it plans to name a "stalking horse" bidder by July 1. The company said an auction is likely on July 19, with a sale hearing on July 22 and sale closing on July 29.

  • Winn-Dixie sues Dollar General

    New York City -- Winn-Dixie Stores has filed suit against Dolgencorp, the parent company of Dollar General. The grocer confirmed that the suit was filed because Dolgencorp “knowingly violates legal, noncompete provisions of Winn-Dixie leases in shopping centers in which both businesses operate,” Winn-Dixie told the Jacksonville Business Journal in an email.

  • Advance Auto Parts opens at The Commons of Crystal Lake

    Crystal Lake, Ill. -- Centro Properties Group said that Advance Auto Parts has opened a new location at The Commons of Crystal Lake, located in Crystal Lake, Ill.

    According to Centro, which is based in New York City, the new store is 8,800 sq. ft.

  • Westside Market to open in Manhattan

    New York City -- New York City-based Winick Realty announced that Westside Market has leased its fourth Manhattan location at 2589 Broadway, between 97th and 98th Streets on the Upper West Side.

    The 46-year-old family-owned food market and caterer took a total of 15,607 sq. ft., including 8,607 sq. ft. on the ground floor and 7,000 sq. ft. on the lower level. It currently runs two additional Upper West Side locations, as well as one in Chelsea.
