  • Macerich opens big-box addition to Long Island mall

    Macerich spent the weekend celebrating the opening of Green Acre Commons, an open-air congregation of big-box retailers adjoining its Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, New York.   A fixture in the retail scene on the Queens-Nassau County border, the 1.8 million-sq.-ft. mall has served the area for more than 50 years with tenants such as Macy’s, J.C. Penney, Century 21, Express, and American Eagle. Last year, Macerich redeveloped and re-merchandised the south side of the property, creating a new entrance for Old Navy and H&M.
  • RILA, ICSC in partnership to improve energy efficiency in leased spaces

    Three groups have joined together to empower commercial building landlords and tenants to improve energy efficiency in leased space and reap up to $5 billion in annual energy savings.   The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), and the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) are launching a coordinated national effort, called the Landlord-Tenant Energy Partnership, to reduce energy use across billions of square feet of leased space.    
  • JLL to handle leasing for Woodmore Town Centre

    JLL has been selected to manage retail leasing for Woodmore Towne Center in Glenarden, Maryland, which is being expanded into a 245-acre mixed-use development.   Under construction at the location east of Washington D.C. off the Capital Beltway are 1,100 residential units, two hotels, and a million sq. ft. of office space. Expansion of the retail space, which has drawn Nordstrom Rack to the center, will bring it to a total of 800,000 sq. ft.  
  • Forever Flawless opens flagship at World Trade Center

    Forever Flawless, a global skin care company that puts diamond dust in its creams, has opened a flagship store at Westfield World Trade Center in New York.   The company, which claims to bring celebrity skin care methods to consumers, sells Black Diamond Age Defying Series, Pink Diamond Collagen treatments, and 24 Karat Gold therapy.   Forever Flawless fields stores in Hong Kong, London, Madrid, Miami, London, and Syndey, among other locales.
  • Cartier, Hermes to open at Stanford Shopping Center

    Simon Properties has announced the impending arrivals of Cartier and Hermes at its Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California. This marks Hermes’ first new U.S. store in five years, according to Simon.   The 6,000-sq.-ft. Hermes shop, which will reside near Neiman Marcus in the center of the newly updated center, is scheduled to open in late 2017 or early 2018. Its focus will be on men's, women's, home, and equestrian collections.   
  • St. Louis Center sold for $10.6 million

    Springfield, Illinois-based Jared Commercial has acquired the Chippewa Center in St. Louis from an investment partnership controlled by Pace Properties. The purchase price was $10.6 million.   The 147,920-sq.-ft. center is located in the densely populated Shrewsbury neighborhood of St. Louis. Chief tenants are Shop ‘n Save, Value City Furniture, and Dollar Tree.   The deal was brokered for Jared Commercial by Mid-America Real Estate.
  • Department store retailer in expansion mode

    Not all department stores are scaling back on their portfolio.    Von Maur Department Stores has opened its third location in the state of Georgia, a 165,000-sq.-ft. store at the Mall of Georgia in Buford.  
  • Discounter in more store closings

    Kmart continues to shrink.   The chain is closing another 64 stores, Marketwatch.com reported.   The latest round of closings are in addition to a decision by Kmart parent Sears Holdings Corp. last April to close 68 Kmart stores this year, the report said.   Kmart operated 941 stores as of Jan. 30, meaning it has now announced plans to close about 14% of its locations.
