  • Walmart extends veteran hiring

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Walmart announced the next step in its Veterans Welcome Home Commitment by guaranteeing a job offer to any eligible U.S. veteran honorably discharged from active duty since the commitment’s original launch on Memorial Day 2013.

    The previous commitment was for veterans within 12 months off active duty. In addition to the Veterans Welcome Home Commitment, Walmart is expanding its 2013 projection of hiring 100,000 veterans by 2018, increasing the projection to 250,000 veterans by the end of 2020.

  • American Eagle flying high on strong Q1 profit, sales

    Pittsburgh -- American Eagle Outfitters on Wednesday reported first-quarter net income of $29.1 million, up from $3.9 million a year ago, amid higher sales and fewer promotions. It results beat Wall Street expectations.

    The retailer posted better-than-expected revenue of $699.5 million for the quarter ended May 2, up 8% from $646.13 million a year ago.

    Total same-store sales rose 7%.

    Walmart is more than doubling the number of veterans it plans to hire by the year 2020.

  • Disney opens its largest store in the world, in Shanghai

    Shanghai -- Disney Store has opened its first store — and largest store to date — in Shanghai, China. With 9,257 sq. ft. of shopping space, the flagship also features an outdoor plaza.

    The store has numerous design features unique to Shanghai, which include:

    • A Disney Magic Kingdom Castle, measuring 19 ft. high at the heart of the store, featuring an hourly musical and projection show;

  • The Limited launches store pickup

    The Limited is finally following the lead of a slew of other retailers that have rolled out buy online, pick up in store services for customers.

  • Study: Retailers will lead digital ad spend

    New York - Digital ad spending in the U.S. will total $58.61 billion this year, and retailers' ad outlays will comprise 22% of that figure, or $12.91 billion, by far outpacing all other U.S. industries. According to new figures from eMarketer.

    Retailers will spend nearly twice as much as any other industry on mobile advertising in 2015, and the sector's $6.65 billion will represent 23.2% of the $28.72 billion that advertisers in the U.S. will spend to reach consumers on mobile devices this year.

  • Government recommends $25 million settlement for PayPal

    San Jose, Calif. – PayPal may have to fork over $25 million in a proposed settlement for allegedly deceiving consumers with the PayPal Credit service, formerly known as BillMeLater. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau wants PayPal to refund $15 million to consumers and pay an additional $10 million in fines for signing up consumers who did not want to participate, not honoring promotional offers, unfairly leading PayPal customers to use PayPal Credit, and charging consumers fees during periods of time disputes were improperly handled.
