    Seattle — A new report from MSLGROUP and the Hartman Group is underscoring grocers’ need to appeal to millennial shoppers in unique ways. The report, Food Shopping in America found that one of the youngest and constantly connected consumer groups is also a tough nut to crack — simultaneously impulsive, thrifty and wary of inauthentic marketing.

    A collection of crowdfunded products introduced on Staples Web site is being billed as a “first-of-its-kind-entrepreneurial store.”

    Staples conducted a contest called Crowd2Shelf and winners of the inaugural event created by Fundable debuted on Staples' new entrepreneurial store at Staples.com/fundable. The contest drew thousands of startups across the country who competed for a chance to crowdfund their way to Staples. The Crowd2Shelf Contest was also made possible by the business strategy firm Sprosty Network.

    The winners of the chain’s inaugural Crowd2Shelf Contest are being featured on Staples’ new entrepreneurial store at Staples.com/fundable. The debut of the online store marks the first time a retailer has used crowdfunding to determine market demand and social support in choosing products to carry.

    New York -- Macy's is planning a catwalk show of its own to close out the biggest fashion week of the year.

    The retailer announced that it will host “Macy’s Presents Fashion’s Front Row” on Sept. 17 in New York City, featuring celebrities, musical acts and a runway show.

  • Target goes digital — in Vogue

    New York -- Target Corp. is going interactive on the pages of Vogue’s September issue.

    The discounter will run an advertising campaign in Vogue that utilizes Shazam’s new visual-recognition technology and makes print ads shoppable through a consumer’s smartphone, the New York Times reported.

    Some 100 Target products appear in the company’s Vogue ads, with roughly 30 available to buy using “shop now” buttons on the Shazam-enabled online site, according to the report.

  • Coming soon to Target: Gender-free signage

    Minneapolis -- Parents and others shopping for toys at Target will no longer be offered product suggestions based on gender.

    The retailer announced it plans to start removing gender-based signage in several departments, including toys, bedding and entertainment. Target said it made the decision after feedback and suggestions from customers.
