  • PetSmart taps Fitch for new store design

    PetSmart is working with retail and design consultancy Fitch to develop a new store environment.   The test store will open in Highland Ranch, Colorado, in fall 2007, and will bring a fresh, new and engaging customer experience to the pet retail marketplace, PetSmart said.    
  • Unusual bedmates: Neiman Marcus joins up with digital fashion disruptor

    It’s an odd partnership — at least at first glance.   Neiman Marcus has entered into a partnership with Rent the Runway, which lets shoppers rent pricey designer dresses as opposed to buying them (at a luxe store like Neiman Marcus).       
  • Ikea partners with Red Cross to give customers unique window into Syria

    Ikea has brought the horrors of the Syrian civil war home to customers at its flagship in Slependen, Norway.   In a joint fundraising effort, the Swedish home furnishings giant, in partnership with the Norwegian Red Cross, has recreated the small, unfurnished apartment of a Syrian mother and her children in the middle of the store. The space is based on a real-life apartment in Damascus, according to CNN.   
  • Whole Foods wooing shoppers with in-store restaurants, bars

    Whole Foods Market is upping its game.   In the face of growing competition, the supermarket chain has been adding restaurants, bars and tap rooms to its stores, reported The Orange County Register.    In select locations in California, Whole Foods is adding in-store outposts of a popular fast-casual eatery, Mendocino Farms, to its stores.   
  • Sailmaker dropping anchor on Fifth Avenue

    One of the world’s largest sail manufacturers is sailing into Manhattan, but it won’t be selling its award-winning sails.   North Sails will open its third retail store on Nov. 16, in Manhattan. The company opened its first store in August, in Annapolis, Md., followed by a location in Newport, Rhode Island.  
  • Sure sign of the holidays

    Lord & Taylor takes customers on a whimsical winter journey in the 79th annual holiday window display at its Manhattan flagship on Fifth Avenue.    With an Enchanted Forest theme, the five windows portray scenes of a winter wonderland and are filled with 34 hand-sculpted holiday animals. Each vignette is enhanced with over 350 square feet of LED walls. The store’s façade features more than 9,000 ft. of mixed garland, foliage, twinkling lights and holiday music      
  • Starbucks goes for safety in numbers with its annual holiday cup

    Starbucks Corp. stirred up a controversy last year when people complained that its all-red holiday cups were too plain. It’s unlikely there will be any complaints this go around.        This year, for the first time ever, Starbucks has 13 different holiday cups, all of them red but each with its own distinct design. And in another twist, the designs were created by customers.  
  • Home décor chain to open in-store cafe

    Bed Bath & Beyond is going local in Brooklyn, New York.   The home décor chain’s upcoming store in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn will include a cafe that will feature local items, brooklynpaper.com reported, along with a coffee bar. The 120,000-sq.-ft. store will also offer cooking classes.     Other features will include a “Born in Brooklyn” department spotlighting items made in the borough as a means of supporting local manufacturers, according to the report.
