    Outdoor retailer REI is setting up shop in a fast-growing gym niche.   REI and Momentum TM Indoor Climbing are launching REI Co-op Climb, which will serve as a hub for climbing gear, programming and events at each of Momentum’s new climbing gyms. Expert instructors from REI’s Outdoor School will help Momentum members and guests gain skills and confidence through gym to crag classes.

  • Nordstrom partners with Hollywood celeb on wellness pop-up

    Nordstrom is welcoming its newest retail curation — one that is centered on wellness.   The department store chain is creating an experience around goop, the modern lifestyle brand founded by Gwyneth Paltrow, through its Pop-In@Nordstrom concept — an ongoing series of themed pop-up shops. Pop-In@Norstrom, which was developed and curated by Olivia Kim, VP of creative projects at Nordstrom, is designed to feature a different brand of new, often exclusive merchandise every four to six weeks.   
  • Saks opens unusual health and wellness mecca

    Shoppers at Saks Fifth Avenue’s Manhattan flagship can now take a fitness class taught by ex-cons in addition to shopping for the latest fashions. They can even learn how to meditate.   The luxury department store has transformed its second floor into a health and fitness hub dubbed The Wellery. The 16,000-plus-sq.-ft. space is comprised of 20 individual spaces offering everything from fitness classes and exercise equipment to athleisure apparel and specialized beauty treatments. It will be open through October 2017.
  • Local chef to curate Gainesville food hall

    Deborah Butler’s vision to remake her family’s Gainesville, Florida, retail complex into a unique, local phenomenon got a little clearer this week.   Butler has put noted local chef and restaurateur Bert Gill in charge of curating the dining establishments at the Stengel Field Food Hall at Butler Town Center, scheduled to open in 2018. It takes its name from the aviation school run on the site in the 1940s and ‘50s by pioneering pilot Carl Stengel.

    Shoppers may notice digital ads, but they are not necessarily clicking on, or responding to, them.   That’s according to a new study by Valassis, “Motivating the Dynamic Shopper: Purchase Decisions In-Progress,” which analyzes how digital ads best engage and then motivate customers to take action. Three groups were studied; parents, millennials and Gen X.   
  • Makeover complete at L.A. area center

    A formerly troubled center in an affluent community south of Los Angeles has capped off an 18-month, $17 million renovation.   Just two years ago, The Vestar-owned Peninsula Center in Rolling Hills Estates was plagued by several vacancies and an image not in keeping with standards in the community, which has a median household income of $144,000.   Today Orchard Supply Hardware and Ulta Beauty occupy the made-over center, along with new dining options Chipotle and The Habit Burger Grill.
