  • Report: Walmart gaining big share in grocery

    Walmart is on fire in grocery and capturing a bigger share from traditional supermarkets.   That's according to Loop Capital analyst Andrew Wolf, who estimates Walmart currently has a 21.5% market share in the U.S. traditional grocery market, reported CNBC.   "Wal-Mart is taking back share from the traditional supermarket at an accelerating rate," Wolf said.  
  • Ulta sizzles in Q1 — offline and on

    Ulta Beauty came out of the first quarter starting gate strong, with earnings that easily topped Wall Street estimates and big increases in store and online sales.       While online sales are growing at a fast pace, the beauty products and services retailer isn't slowing down its store growth. It said it will open 100 new stores in its current fiscal year.    
  • Office supplies giant names marketing chief

    Staples has added a new marketing leader to its executive team.   Michelle Bottomley has been appointed chief marketing officer. In this role, she will be responsible for marketing across Staples, and helping to promote the company’s focus on its North American Delivery business. She will report to Staples’ CEO and president Shira Goodman.  
  • PREIT puts two malls on the market

    PREIT’s mall-pruning program picked up during the retail real estate industry’s big RECon show.   As the show floor opened in Las Vegas, the Philadelphia-based company announced it had put up for sale Logan Valley Mall in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and Valley View Mall in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. PREIT reported it had received unsolicited interest in these properties and was willing to dispose of them to increase its cash position.  
  • Motor-themed restaurant/retail concept revs up for U.S. debut

    Start your engines: Ace Café, a motorcycle and car-themed chain, has parked itself in downtown Orlando.     The 35,000-sq-ft. entertainment, dining and retail destination is the first North American location of the London-based brand and the sixth Ace Cafe in the world. Ace Cafe Orlando spans two floors and features a full-service restaurant, four bars, a coffee bar, a stage, a mezzanine that overlooks the main floor dining area and stage, and private and semi-private spaces for groups.  
  • New Nordstrom board member could bolster innovation

    A luxury retail giant just made a move that could step up its digital efforts.    Nordstrom appointed Stacy Brown-Philpot to its board of directors, and she will also serve as a member of the board’s finance and technology committees. She replaces Enrique 'Rick' Hernandez, Jr., who announced earlier this year that he would not be seeking re-election.   
  • Lowe's off to soft start in Q1

    Even with a double-digit sales increase, Lowe's Companies still managed to disappoint analysts with first quarter profit and comparable sales that missed their estimates.   Sales rose 10.7% to $16.9 billion, up from $15.2 billion in 2016. Same-store sales rose 1.9%, below the 2.6% increase expected by analysts polled by Consensus Metrix.  
  • Beauty brand streamlines B2B gift card program

    Sephora is all about offering top-notch service to its customers — even its business partners.   According to the Incentive Research Foundation and Incentive Gift Card Council, business-to-business (B2B) gifting is becoming more prevalent across U.S. companies, as they spend $22.7 billion per year on gift cards. Sephora’s new partnership will enable the company to claim a bigger portion of this market share.
