  • Weitzman brings in investment exec

    Austin, Texas -- The Weitzman Group announced that Bradley Bailey has been named senior VP and director of investment sales for Central Texas and The Valley for The Weitzman Group.

    Bailey will work with Lance Morris, president of The Weitzman Group in Austin, and David Nicolson, president of Weitzman’s San Antonio office. 

    In this new position, Bailey will handle investment sales and marketing for retail and commercial properties. 

  • Subway to open 2,000 North American locations in 2011

    Milford, Conn. -- Subway Restaurants said Friday that more than 2,000 franchisees are actively searching for locations slated for 2011 openings.

    In order to reach its development goals, the chain said that a contingent of Subway representatives will be manning the brand’s booth at the International Council of Shopping Centers’ RECon convention, May 23 to 25, in Las Vegas.

  • Target VP promotes retailer as beauty destination during FIT presentation

    NEW YORK — Each year, the graduating class of the Master of Professional Studies degree program in cosmetics and fragrance marketing and management at FIT researches and forecasts trends or growth concepts within a specific area of the beauty industry, which they then present to an audience of industry executives.

    Target sponsored this year's presentation titled "Beauty For All: Innovations in Mass Retail." On hand to deliver keynote remarks during the event was Will Setliff, VP marketing for Target.

  • GameStop profit rises 6.9% in Q1

    Grapevine, Texas -- GameStop Corp. reported Thursday that fiscal first-quarter profit rose 6.9% to $80.4 million, compared with $75.2 million a year earlier.

    Overall sales rose 9.5% to $2.28 billion, while same-store sales increased 5.3%.

  • Gap earnings fall 23% on soaring costs; CEO to focus turning around namesake division

    San Francisco -- Gap reported Thursday that its first-quarter earnings plummeted 23% as costs rose faster than expected, and the chain dramatically lowered its full-year earnings forecast.

    Gap is spending about 20% more to produce each item than it did a year ago -- a much faster rise than it expected, the Associated Press reported.

    Gap’s net income was $233 million for the quarter ended April 30, compared with $302 million. The performance was slightly better than analysts expected, however.

  • Children's Place sales and income up in Q1

    SECAUCUS, N.J. — The Children's Place Retail Stores has announced net sales of $430.8 million for the first quarter ended April 30, a 2% increase compared with $422.1 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2010. Comparable-retail sales declined 3.2% in the first quarter of 2011.

    The company reported that income from continuing operations after tax was $29.1 million, or $1.10 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2011, compared to $28 million, or $1.00 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2010.

  • Sears posts $170 million loss on weak sales

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- Sears Holding Corp. reported Thursday that it recorded a bigger-than-expected loss in the first quarter as its shoppers cut back on spending. The chain said it lost $170 million, compared with net income of $16 million in the year-ago period.

    The retailer had cautioned earlier in May that it expected a first-quarter loss due mainly to a drop in appliance, clothing and consumer electronic sales.

  • Charming Charlie to open at Trinity Commons

    Fort Worth, Texas -- New York City-based Centro Properties Group said that fashion accessory retailer Charming Charlie will open a new store in Fort Worth, Texas.

    The new 8,878-sq.-ft. store will open at the Centro-owned Trinity Commons shopping center.
