Starbucks Corp. is living up to its reputation as one of the nation’s most socially progressive retailers.    On the heels of President Donald Trump's indefinite suspension of Syrian refugees and temporary travel bans that apply to seven predominantly Muslim countries, the coffee giant pledged to hire 10,000 refugees to work at its stores around the world during the next five years.  

PizzaRev, a build-your-own fast-casual pizza concept, began its expansion into Tennessee this week with the opening of a Memphis location. The grand opening at 6450 Poplar Avenue was celebrated with an all-day fundraiser for Le Bonheur Children’s Research Hospital.   Two additional locations are under construction in Memphis, and another is underway in Nashville. PizzaRev currently franchises and operates 47 stores and has more than 200 others under development in 17 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico.  

Starbucks posted disappointing sales growth for its first quarter, citing “a challenging environment for restaurant retailers overall.”   The coffee giant reported that its consolidated net revenues increased 7% in the quarter, ended January 1, 2017, to $5.73 billion, less than analysts had expected.  

A new acquisition by Alibaba positions the company to accelerate the accessibility of global financial services.   Ant Financial Services Group, Alibaba’s e-payment arm and the parent company of Alipay, is purchasing money transfer firm MoneyGram for approximately $880 million, according to Business Insider.   

Eager for more control of how its products are shipped, Amazon is now organizing oceanic shipments.  

The owner of one of the largest independent furniture chains in the country has sold his company to a private equity firm approximately 58 years after he founded it.  

J.C. Penney is shoring up its commitment to its new technology lab in Bangalore, India.   The chain has tapped Snehil Gambhir as VP and managing director of its global in-house center (GIC). Tasked with leading all operations at the company’s GIC, he will support and expand a variety of key business functions, including IT, digital, store operations, analytics, marketing, infrastructure and merchandise operations.  

Forest City announced it has closed on the sale of Shops at Bruckner Boulevard in the Bronx to Urban Edge Properties for $32 million. The seller expects to net $9.2 million in the transaction.
