  • Stop & Shop showcases environmental commitment

    Purchase, N.Y. -- As part of the 2013 launch of a commitment to responsible retailing, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC is making efforts that reduce waste in stores and improve efficiencies in energy uses in both new and existing stores.

    By 2020, the company has set a goal of getting to "zero waste," diverting 90% of waste going to landfills and incinerations through the expansion of its organic recycling program and new opportunities for recycling cardboard, plastic, paper, and single stream recycling.

  • Google taps Payoneer as payments provider for its Trusted Stores program

    Google has tapped Payoneer, a leading global payments company, as a payments provider for Google Trusted Stores. Payoneer will power the program’s customer payouts, providing bank transfer services that enable Google Trusted Stores to send payments to people in the countries where it currently operates.

    The Google Trusted Stores program identifies online merchants that Google deems trustworthy for consumers. Google stands behind the merchants that have earned the Trusted Store badge with a $1,000 lifetime purchase protection for shoppers.

  • Deloitte: Consumer spending flat in February

    New York -- The Deloitte Consumer Spending Index remained flat in February 2014, showing only a marginal change. The Index tracks consumer cash flow as an indicator of future consumer spending.

    The Index, which comprises four components, tax burden, initial unemployment claims, real wages and real home prices, ticked down slightly to 3.9 from 4.0 last month. Highlights of the Index include:

    Tax Burden: The tax rate stayed at 11.8%, consistent with recent months.

  • Icahn wants eBay to sell 20% of PayPal in an IPO

    New York -- As part of minority eBay shareholder Carl Icahn’s ongoing battle to separate eBay from sister company PayPal, the activist investor on Wednesday urged fellow eBay shareholders in an open letter to sell 20% of its PayPal unit in an IPO.

    The latest move, which Icahn said would prompt a stand-alone PayPal while preserving the synergies between the pair of companies, is softer than Icahn’s January announcement that he wanted a full spinoff of PayPal from eBay.  

  • Wilson Sporting Goods marks centennial with contest

    Wilson Sporting Goods is celebrating a century of sport with the launch of its “100 Venues in 100 Days” contest.

    Participants will have the chance to win daily prizes as well as a grand prize trip to the 2014 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament in New York City.

    “Wilson celebrates athletes at every level, from the backyard to the professional player,” said Tom Gruger, VP of marketing. “To kick off our 100th year, we will celebrate our partnership with these athletes as we look forward to the next century of champions.”

  • Survey: 60% of consumers blame retailers in breaches

    San Mateo, Calif. – Six-in-10 (60%) of those who knew about any data breaches at notable retailers, such as Target and Neiman Marcus, hold the merchant responsible for preventing future incidents of a data breach. The “2014 Consumer Reaction to Financial Data Breaches Study” of more than 2,000 adult U.S. consumers from Feedzai and Harris Interactive also found that 43% think nothing is more aggravating than getting credit/debit card data stolen.

  • Rwanda tops A.T. Kearney's First African Retail Development Index

    New York -- Rwanda, Nigeria, Namibia, Tanzania and Gabon occupied the top five places of the first-ever A.T. Kearney African Retail Development Index (ARDI), a new study designed to help large, organized retailers determine where and how to best enter Sub-Saharan Africa's rapidly growing retail market. The ARDI not only identifies the markets in Africa most attractive for retail expansion today, but those that offer the most potential in the future.

  • Sally Beauty card data may have been exposed

    Denton, Texas – Fewer than 25,000 customer credit card numbers may have been exposed in a recent security breach at Sally Beauty Holdings Inc. The retailer said in a statement that an investigation by Verizon indicates credit card data may have been taken by hackers.
