Walmart has made its paid membership program available to consumers in Mexico, adding new benefits.

Walmart is launching Walmart+, which it introduced in the U.S. in September 2020, in Mexico for the U.S. equivalent of roughly $5 per month or $47 per year. In the U.S., the program costs $12.95 per month or $98 per year.

The program include free shipping on eligible online purchases, as well as free delivery for scheduled orders, of at least 399 pesos or more through Walmart’s digital channels. (As a sign-up perk, both of minimums will be waived through Nov. 30.)

Members will also receive a a free Universal+ Essential subscription. The streaming service features movies, series and a selection of live channels that can be played on any device.

In a new benefit unique to Mexico, members will receive an extra 2 GB of high-speed data when they reload their internet accounts with Bait, a Walmart-owned mobile internet provider in Mexico,

Walmart is also incorporating health care into the membership in Mexico. The program also includes access to Programa Salud Individual telehealth, which includes medical consultations, nutritional and psychological guidance, as well as daily discounts of 5% to 8% at Walmart pharmacies. It also features double benefits through the Walmart Beneficios rewards program.

Walmart+ arrives in Mexico following more than six years of experience in the U.S. and its recent launch in Canada. On average, Walmart says U.S. members shop three times more frequently, spend four times as much, and visit e-commerce channels seven times more often than non-members.

The retailer recently began making memberships in the Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus U.S. subscription programs available together for $120 a year — almost $100 less than members pay to buy individual memberships at the two retailers. (Both stores will continue to offer standalone memberships.)

"Walmart+ allows us to expand the value we offer our customers and enhance their experience with Walmart through a more comprehensive offering,” said Karthicka Krishnasamy, senior VP, e-commerce and growth, Walmart de México y Centroamérica. “By bringing together benefits that address different everyday needs, we aim to build long-term customer relationships and continue accelerating the growth of our omnichannel business.”

In June, Walmart started making a curated assortment of hundreds of thousands of items from its online marketplace available to customers in Mexico. The assortment includes categories such as apparel, home, electronics and orders are delivered via the same network that serves customers in the U.S. Shipping and customs clearance will be handled by international carriers in what the retailer says is an effort to help ensure reliable delivery.

Walmart operates in Mexico and Latin America under the Walmart de México y Centroamérica (Walmex) banner. Walmex operates in six countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua. It has more than 4,000 stores and clubs, as well as 32 distribution centers in the region.
