Walmart introduces tailored ChatGPT environment
Walmart is expanding the shopping features available to its customers in the ChatGPT model.
The discount giant is partnering with OpenAI, the developer of the generative AI model ChatGPT, which interacts with users in a conversational style that mimics human interaction and uses machine learning to continually refine and improve its responses, to deliver a new in-app ChatGPT shopping experience.
The new experience lets Walmart shoppers go directly from discovery in ChatGPT into a customized Walmart environment that supports account linking, loyalty and Walmart payments. This new experience is now available in web browsers, with app access in iOS and Android scheduled to follow shortly.
“By partnering closely with OpenAI, we’ve been able to learn together as we move quickly to shape what agentic commerce can become,” said Daniel Danker, executive VP, AI acceleration, product and design at Walmart. “Today’s launch brings Walmart directly into the ChatGPT experience, combining leading conversational AI with the decades of retail expertise we’ve built serving customers.”
In October 2025, Walmart launched a collaboration with OpenAI which allowed Walmart and Sam’s Club shoppers to complete purchases directly within ChatGPT. The feature was based on "instant checkout," an offering from OpenAI that enables users to discover, browse, and purchase items directly from partner retailers within the ChatGPT environment.

This new expanded Walmart ChatGPT experience follows OpenAI’s determination that its instant checkout feature failed to meet expectations.
“We’ve found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we’re allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery,” OpenAI said in a corporate blog post.
Retailers, such as Walmart, that are interested in experimenting with deeper integrations and native experiences on ChatGPT continue to have the option to develop ChatGPT apps, according to the company.
“As with other parts of ChatGPT, we’re building iteratively,” OpenAI said in the blog post. “We’re learning from early launches, incorporating feedback from users and merchants, and continuing to improve the experience over time. These updates reflect our focus on where ChatGPT can add the most value in shopping today. We’re grateful to the partners building with us, and we look forward to sharing more as this work evolves.”
Headquartered in Bentonville, Ark., Walmart operates more than 10,750 stores and numerous eCommerce websites in 19 countries.
