  • Report: Amazon to open pop-up stores nationwide

    Coming to the local mall — Amazon?
     
    Amazon plans to open dozens of pop-up stores in malls across the nation, according to Business Insider.
     
    The temporary stores, whose total could reach 100 next year, will showcase and sell the company's devices, particularly its Echo home speaker, the report said.
       

  • Lands’s End “pops up” with 8,000-sq.-ft. store

    The Lands' End experience has arrived in the SoHo section of Manhattan.   Lands' End opened an 8,000-sq.-ft., two-floor temporary store, at 580 Broadway, featuring men's, women's and kids' apparel, footwear and accessories from the fall, holiday and winter along with a variety of personalization services and experiences.    
  • Pet supplies chain keeps opening stores

    Petco will be busy in September.   The retailer announced it will open 13 stores in September, along with one relocation. The expansion reflects Petco’s 2016 growth plan, which includes 34 new Petco stores and one new Unleashed by Petco year-to date.  
  • Gap among those unfazed by Macy’s coming store closures

    Top suppliers don’t seem very worried about Macy’s looming store closings. And neither does the CEO of Gap Inc., according to a report by CNBC.com.   Gap chief executive Art Peck told attendees at Goldman Sachs' Annual Global Retailing Conference that he sees the Macy's store closures as an opportunity to grab market share, the report said.  
  • Target caters to the college crowd

    Students at Boston University have a new, convenient shopping option.   Target Corp. has opened one of its smaller format stores adjacent to the West Campus section of the university, reported BU Today. Similar stores are set to open in the coming months near the University of Chicago and at Penn State.   The 16,000-sq.-ft. Boston store carries merchandise specifically geared toward college students, from food staples like ramen noodles to bedding and bath essentials.  
  • NRDC names Mannion chief of property operations

    Photo: Noel Mannion   Noel Mannion, who spent the bulk of his career with the National Realty & Development Corp., has been named the Purchase, New York-based company’s executive VP of property operations.   Mannion, previously managing director of operations, will be responsible for overseeing budgeting, maintenance, repair and improvement projects, billing, lease administration, and risk management for NRDC’s portfolio of more than 78 projects in 14 states.  
  • Macerich opens its rebuilt San Francisco ‘fortress’

    It was already generating $700 per square foot in revenue, but Broadway Plaza in San Francisco’s East Bay got a complete makeover from owner Macerich that was unveiled last week. Fireworks and a performance by Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray accompanied the ribbon-cutting.   Gross leasing area was expanded to beyond 900,000 sq. ft. and more than 50 new stores inhabit the open-air center that debuted in 1951. Nordstrom, Neiman-Marcus, and Macy’s anchor the plaza that Macerich has owned for the last 30 years.  
  • C-store chain bullish on store expansion; to enter Ohio

    Casey’s General’s Stores on Tuesday detailed an aggressive store expansion and renovation schedule along with record earnings for its first quarter.   The Iowa-based chain expects to build or acquire 77 to 116 stores, replace 35 existing locations, and complete 100 major remodels in its current fiscal year. Currently, it has 39 new stores under construction, including its first store in the state of Ohio.
