  • Joseph Abboud flagship store opens in Manhattan; first under Men’s Wearhouse umbrella

    New York -- Joseph Abboud has opened a flagship, the first under the umbrella of Men's Wearhouse, on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Men’s Wearhouse acquired the Abboud brand in 2013.

    The 4,300-sq.-ft. location was designed and styled collaboratively by Jeffrey Hutchison & Associates and Joseph Abboud, and is reminiscent of London's Savile Row.

  • Soft Surroundings enhances customer experience with Ambius scenting

    Reading, Pa. -- Specialty retailer Soft Surroundings has chosen Ambius Premium Scenting to enhance the shopping experience for its customers at all 18 retail locations. The scenting is designed to create greater customer dwell time and increase purchasing intent for this innovative retailer.

  • Ikea installing fuel cell system that convert biogas into electricity

    Conshohocken, Pa. -- Ikea announced plans to install a fuel cell system at its location in Emeryville, California. Consistent with the retailer’s focus on emerging energy technologies, is the first Ikea in the world to convert biogas into electricity through a clean electro-chemical process. The fuel cell system will be installed, commissioned and activated by this summer, 2015.

    Ikea contracted Bloom Energy, Sunnyvale, California, for the design, development and installation of the fuel system.

  • A.R.E., POPAI move ahead with merger talks

    Las Vegas -- The boards of directors of A.R.E. (the Association for Retail Environments) and POPAI (Point of Purchase Advertising International) have voted to enter a due diligence phase and work in good faith toward a definitive agreement to merge the two associations.

    At their respective board meetings held during GlobalShop in Las Vegas this week, both not-for-profit groups agreed to a preliminary framework that will allow them to better serve their members and advance the industry as a combined organization.

  • Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay named Store of the Year by A.R.E.

    Las Vegas -- Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay, a glamorous bridal shop on the top floor of the Hudson’s Bay’s flagship and headquarters building in Toronto,  took the big prize — Store of the Year — in the Association for Retail Environments 2015 Design Awards. The annual awards recognize the best in retail design, store fixtures and visual presentation.
     

  • Industry vet Tony Mancini named CEO of Global Visual Group

    New York -- Global Visual Group (GVG) has appointed 30-year retailing veteran Tony Mancini as CEO. Mancini has held significant senior executive leadership positions, including  Las Vegas Sands Corp., MGM Mirage Design Group and Walt Disney Parks & Resorts/Walt Disney Imagineering, leading its global capital development portfolios worldwide.
       

  • SPECS 2015: Three Store Planning Innovation Takeways

    Chain Store Age hosted its 51st annual SPECS 2015 conference on March 15-17, in Las Vegas. Here are three takeways from the conference concerning technological innovation in the store planning area:

    1. Overflowing Shelves are the Enemy

But in actuality, overflowing shelves leave store associates too busy to assist customers, who are left overwhelmed.

  • Trader Joe’s: Time-lapse construction video

    Trader Joe’s will open its first-ever Schaumburg (Illinois) location on March 20, at Woodfield Village Green, a 687,015-sq.-ft. foot shopping center owned by DDR.

    Check out this quick time-lapse video of the nine-month construction process, which involved filling in a man-made retention pond and building the store on top.
