  • Jones Lang LaSalle names Florida managing director

    Orlando, Fla. -- Jones Lang LaSalle said Tuesday it has appointed Carson Good to lead the firm’s retail capital market business throughout Florida.

  • The Bargain Shops names Dollar General exec as CEO

    Toronto -- Canadian discounter The Bargain Shops said Tuesday it has hired Beryl Jack Buley, former division president of Dollar General Corp., as its CEO.

    The retailer said it is prepping for Target Corp.’s takeover of former Zellers stores across Canada in two years, which could shift some of Bargain Shop customers over to Target.

    According to an Associated Press report, however, Buley said he is not worried about the impending competition from Target, saying that “enormous opportunity” remains in Canada.

  • Gordon Bros. names managing director

    Boston -- Gordon Bros. Group said Tuesday it has named Leonard R. Polivy as managing director in the Retail Division.

    Polivy began his jewelry career with Gordon Bros. in the mid-1980s and then went on to become president of a wholesale diamond company. He also held other management positions and worked on valuing and restructuring clients within the jewelry sector before returning to Gordon Bros. in 2009.

  • Nurses in Walgreens’ Take Care Clinics in Illinois forming union

    New York City -- The Illinois Nurses Association announced Thursday it has agreed to represent the approximately 180 nurse practitioners who work in the Take Care Clinics in the Chicago area, Rockford and Peoria. Walgreens operates 45 Take Care Clinics in Illinois.

    The nurses are concerned about a pay reduction, an increase in the cost of their health benefits and other issues.

    The Illinois Nurses Association has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to form a union of nurse practitioners working at the clinics.

  • Former Wal-Mart CEO to leave Goldman board

    New York City -- Investment bank Goldman Sachs announced that H. Lee Scott Jr., former CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, will not stand for re-election at the annual meeting in May.

    Scott has not been at Goldman for long. In 2010, Goldman tapped him to replace the former managing director of McKinsey & Company, Rajat K. Gupta, when he left the board.

  • Home Depot centralizes in-store hiring

    New York City -- The Home Depot has streamlined its in-store hiring process by centralizing it at the corporate level, making the process more uniform across the chain. Potential store hires now go through two reviews at the corporate level before they are even granted an in-person store interview, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported.

  • Target named one of the ‘World’s Most Ethical Companies’

    Minneapolis -- Target Corp. said Wednesday it has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for 2011.

    The Ethisphere Institute, an international business ethics organization, honored Target for implementing upright business practices and initiatives that are instrumental to the company’s success, benefit the community, and raise the bar for ethical standards within the industry.

    This is the fifth consecutive year that Target has received the award.

  • Safeway names new board member

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Safeway has announced the appointment of T. Gary Rogers to the company's board of directors. The company's board of directors will expand from nine to 10 members with this new appointment.

    "Gary's vast experience as a supplier to the grocery industry, his business acumen and experience as a director will be great assets to the board," said Safeway chairman, resident and CEO, Steve Burd. "We are pleased he is joining our board."
