  • Lowe’s face backlash in wake of canceling ads on ‘All-American Muslim’ reality show

    New York City -- Lowe's Home Improvement is facing a backlash in the wake of its decision to stop advertising on a reality show about American Muslims. About 40 local and national Muslim and Arab-American leaders from around the nation are expected to participate Monday evening in a conference call to discuss the decision by the home improvement chain to pull its ads from the cable show "All-American Muslim,” The Detroit News reported.

  • InComm launches digital content and gaming destination at Best Buy Mexico

    Atlanta -- Prepaid product and transaction services company InComm said Monday that it has teamed with Best Buy Co. to launch a digital content and gaming destination at eight Best Buy stores in Mexico.

    Best Buy has partnered with InComm for nine years in the United States and this new offering represents a global expansion of the relationship.

    The InComm prepaid destination includes digital content and gaming products such as iTunes, Play Station, Club Penguin, IMVU and Zynga.

  • Report: Tesco postpones opening wholesale stores in India

    Mumbai, India -- A Monday report by Reuters said that the world’s third-largest retailer Tesco Plc has delayed its plans to set up wholesale stores in India, as it faces mountains of political red tape and controversy in the country.

    Reuters, citing a report in the Business Standard newspaper, said that the supermarket giant will instead focus on setting up warehouses and back-end infrastructure. 

  • Cosi announces new CEO

    Deerfield, Ill. -- Cosi announced the appointment of Carin L. Stutz as the company's new CEO and president beginning Jan.1. She also will join the Cosi board of directors.

    Stutz, 55, joins Cosi from Brinker International, where she was president of global business development, leading all aspects of franchise development and operations for 240 Chili's and Maggiano's restaurants around the globe.

     

  • Illinois lawmakers reach deal to keep Sears HQ in state

    Chicago -- Illinois House leaders have agreed to pass tax breaks in order to keep Sears Holdings Corp. from abandoning its Hoffman Estates, Ill., headquarters in search of a new out-of-state home, according to Reuters.

    The deal is also designed to keep Ill.-based securities and commodities trading company CME Group in-state as well.

    The House had previously shot down the tax package. 

  • Wal-Mart launches internal probe into overseas compliance

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. revealed Thursday it has launched an internal investigation into whether its overseas operations complied with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in matters including permitting, licensing and inspections. 

    Few details about the internal probe have been released, but the retailer revealed the investigation in a quarterly report filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The law in question deals with bribery and accounting rules when companies are doing business overseas. 

  • Barnes & Noble earns top rating in 2012 Corporate Equality Index

    New York City -- Barnes & Noble said Thursday it has earned the top rating of 100% for the fourth year in a row in the 2012 Corporate Equality Index, an annual survey administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

    Barnes & Noble joins the ranks of 190 other major U.S. businesses, which received top marks for their treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender employees and consumers.

  • Consumer report: Holiday retail season starts strong, led by personal electronics

    Yonkers, N.Y. -- Despite flagging consumer confidence, December's Consumer Reports Index, a measure of overall consumer financial health, showed that the holiday season is off to a good start, with excellent activity in November and the prospect of a strong December.

    The Past 30-Day Retail Index for December was 13.9, up from 12.4 a year ago, and planned spending for December was also strong at 12.7 compared to 11.8 last year. Among the categories comprising the Retail Index, the largest gains were in personal electronics.
