  • Guess Q3 income up 7.8%, raises outlook

    Los Angeles -- Guess said its fiscal third-quarter net income rose 7.8% to $69.1 million from $64.1 million a year ago, surpassing analysts forecasts. The company lifted its full-year earnings forecast.

    Revenue for the quarter ended Oct. 30 rose 17% to a record $613.9 million, also topping predictions, with a strong boost from international sales.

    The company's retail stores in North America generated revenue of $253.7 million in the third quarter, up 5.9% from the same period a year ago. Same-store sales increased 1.5%.

  • Survey: Holiday spending still up for grabs

    New York City -- A majority (88%) of consumers have gifts and presents still to purchase, and 79% are undecided about exactly what gifts to buy this year, according to the Holiday Shopping Index, an annual survey by StrategyOne, a Daniel J. Edelman strategic research and measurement consultancy firm.

  • Zale’s loss widens

    Dallas -- Zale Corp.’s first-quarter loss widened as a debt-related charge hit the bottom line but a slight drop in revenue was offset by higher margins. The jewelry retailer reported a loss of $97.9 million, up from $59.7 million a year earlier.

    Sales fell 0.7% to $327 million, from $329 million. Same-store sales in the quarter ended Oct. 31 fell 1.1%.

  • J. Crew to be acquired in $3 billion buyout

    New York City -- J. Crew Group is close to an agreement to be bought by TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners for about $2.8 billion, according to reports by the Associated Press, Bloomberg and other news groups.

    TPG and Leonard Green would pay $43.50 a share in cash, or 16% more than J. Crew’s closing share price yesterday, according to various reports.
